One Boat, 2 Hull ID No.s?

Hi,
Thanks to all for reading this and I hope that someone can help. I am new to the arcane rules of boat registration, so please be kind if the answer is too obvious to you.

My boat hull was manufactured in 1986 in Taiwan. It was imported to the US with finished interior and engine. The spars, rigging, sails, nav system, etc., were procured and installed in the US where the boat would have been commissioned.

The accompanying photo shows an ID number located in the main cabin bilge. It is not the manufacturer's "Hull Identification Number." I am wondering if it was assigned by the company that converted the hull into a sailboat. If so, does anyone have an idea on how to connect the number with the American builder?

All suggestions, the polite ones anyways, will be gratefully received.
Thank you,

What you are looking at is the USCG documentation number so you boat appears to have been previously documented (not registered). The HIN of your vessel should be QLM42008G586.

Go to this site https://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/st1/Coa...selByName.html and do a seacrch on that number

New boat to you? The documentation only expired on June 30, 2017

Boatpoker's link will tell you more.

Thank you.
A bit more background, the boat was registered in Canada after its USCG deregistration last year.

My more important question is: "is it possible to find out who or which company made the hull into a sailboat?" This would likely have been done in 1986 in Illinois (Chicago area) or a little further north in Wisconsin.

No "official" way to do it. Your best shot are the various forums. Adding a photo may help. You can go to the link I previously posted and get the name of the previous US owners and back track from there. Google is your friend.

For more info on Canadian Registration, Canadian Licensing, USCG Documentation and US State Registration try this link

Hylas boats were, and I think still are, built in Taiwan. If memory serves, they were built in the Queen Long Boatyard, which corresponds to the first few letters in the documentation number, which it should. They were originally called "Stevens", or maybe "Stephens", as in Stevens 42, but the name was eventually changed to Hylas.

They have always been well thought of, under either name. Hopefully one of the many Hylas owners out there will chime in with more personal knowledge, but I am pretty sure what I have written is correct.

Sure you meant to say the first three characters of the HIN/MIC, not "the first few letters in the Documentation Number".
