Re: Painting my topsides - in the water or on the hard?

If it is the top then roll and brush it with the boat in the water. Did that last winter (600 sqft patterned anti skid). If it is the boat side then recommend out of water.

Re: Painting my topsides - in the water or on the hard?

I helped my paint his boat in the water anchored in Provincetown Ma many decades ago. From the dinghy, anchored out. It was a wooden sloop 36 feet long and the paints those days were not nearly as good as modern paints. It came out fine but not "yacht quality" but better than some fishing boats. Some of even one part urethane I have used in recent years seem to shrink as the cure and any brush strokes disappear. I wouldn't hesitate to do it in the water. good luck. Foufou

Here is another thread, although the subject is "waxing". Same issues apply I would think as with "painting".

Re: Painting my topsides - in the water or on the hard?

Anecdote:

A few years back we were anchored in Baie de Orphelinats, Noumea, New Caledonia. One early morning we were dinghying ashore to go to market and passed some Kiwi friends who were in their dink too, sanding away on their topsides. Asked them what they were up to, and they said they were gonna paint the hull. WTF? we said and continued on our way, thinking they were nuts. Late that afternoon we returned and by golly they were just finishing the job, rolling on the last bits of the cheap housepaint that they were using.

The next morning we had a better look at their ~45 foot steel yacht, and yes, there was a bit of orange peel but she passed the 10 foot test with flying colors, and looked way better than she had before the painting. They said the house paint only lasted a couple of years, but a day's hard work every couple of years and 50 bucks worth of paint seemed a good tradeoff to us.

YMMV

which is as it should be !

frankly i'm amazed that so many folk don't seem to regard this (dripping paint into the water) as important...

cheers,

Re: Painting my topsides - in the water or on the hard?

Chrisr years ago when sailing past Newcastle we spotted a large red cloud in the water. We had no idea what it was but an hour later we passed an anchored ship with the crew on scaffolding planks painting the topsides. So I guess the red cloud was a lost can of paint.
Cheers
