Panama Dreamin'

One day I will transit all the major locks and canals.

In the meantime, I found this a really good Video for the Panama canal.

Enjoy.

Someone disrespected the country in which he was visiting. Other members disagreed, and the discussion became acrimonious and political. For a while, the thread was closed while one of the moderators took a lot of time to clean it up.

THANK YOU, you know who you are.

Re: Panama Dreamin'

It's a neat transit, for sure. The only trouble is that it's a very tightly run operation, so it's all business, not any time to smell the roses. We've spent the night in Gatun lake for a couple of transits, straight through another time. Since Pedro Miguel yacht club closed, there's no chance to stop in the lake now, as far as I know.

Probably the thing that strikes me most is the Galliard cut. To think of the thousands who perished digging through there is seriously humbling. Really an incredible undertaking.

Re: Panama Dreamin'

Spending the night on Lake Gatun is cool and the only way to do it on a cruising boat is to transit the canal. Unfortunately, as you say, its all business so you cant for example delay the second half of your transit for a few days to explore lake Gatun.

It is also way cool to see the 100+ year old canal operate from the inside.

With the new canal expansion you transit w Neuvo PANAMAX class vessels...massive. Though to my knowledge, small boats are not routed thru the new locks.

Suggested reading: Path Between The Seas by McCullough (sp?)...the definitive Panama Canal book...covers from the start of the French era to USA turn over to Panama.

While waiting for your transit, allocate some time for related day trips too: the visitors center exhibit at Miraflores locks is very well done and very informative. There is another good canal/Panama history museum in Casco Viejo (old part of Panama City). And transiting by train between Pamama City and Colon is cool.

Some pics and vids from some of my transits below to fuel your dreaming:

Sorry, no fancy editing, just raw images.
