Parachute

https://honolulu.craigslist.org/mau/...931068262.html

I’m thinking about picking this up. Pros, cons? I’ve used a parachute off the big island on a commercial hand line ahi boat before and was impressed. If it’s in good shape, I see no reason not to have this on my 43’. Any experiences? I’m also curious about putting a sea anchor out like this in a gale. Thanks for your responses and time. Aloha

Re: Parachute

Don’t think it will meet the requirements of a sea anchor, nor would I rely on it in an emergency; likely to make more trouble than it will solve. I’d look at making or buying a series drogue.

Parachute

You know someone was selling a real sea anchor for a good price not long ago, 18’ if I remember right, which should be your size.

Aerial parachutes are of course designed for much less dense fluid than seawater and designed for much less weight than a 40’ boat too.
Additionally UV degrades them quickly and you have no idea what your getting/
In short I’d buy a proper Sea Anchor, yes people have used parachutes in the past successfully, but I wouldn’t want to risk it myself

Re: Parachute

Think like a spinnaker in the water with world's worst tangle of paracord encasing your hull, propeller, standing rigging.....

Thanks guys. Looks like I’ll pass on the anchor.
