Re: Petition for the safe harbour in Eden NSW

Fellow Boaters
Lets not get hung up on definitions - that is for another thread.
Lets concentrate on the need for a safe boating harbour in Eden.

It is important to have a protected place to shelter.

Why not, it keeps the thread at the top of the "New Posts" list so more people see it and will sign.

And besides, for some of us, it's fun to debate questions like "where does the east coast of Australia" end.

Oh... BTW, Recherche Bay is around 20 miles further south than Port Davey, so it is the southernmost deepwater anchorage in Tassie/Australia.

Fixed it for you......

No such luck, Ping! If I was a permanent resident, I'd have a Medicare card and be LOTS richer than I am. We're considered "temporary residents" on a class 410 visa. Not a bad gig, but no benefits attached.

And Chris, Gabo is maybe a port of refuge but not much of an anchorage IMO. Hell of a phallic lighthouse, though!

Re: Petition for the safe harbour in Eden NSW

And FWIW:

Was chatting with an Edenite friend yesterday, a chap who has been involved with the years of negotiation re the various plans for harbour improvement. He's not so keen on the proposal that might be invoked if they heed the petition and get under way. His point is that the floating wave attenuator proposed now is totally incapable of mitigating the big swells generated by deep lows that pass nearby... they will just sweep on through and would destroy any marina development that might be built.

He's got a point... a storm a couple of years ago wiped out the very substantial woodchip loading wharf and conveyor, and it was on the relatively protected southern side of Two fold bay. The wave rider buoy just outside the bay recorded 20 (thats twenty) meter swells in that storm! And such big, long wavelength forms just go right under floating wavebreakers (which work ok on wind waves and chop).

I still feel that the petition has merit if it gets the project moving again. There's always the possibility to amend it once under discussion again.

Jim

I dunno... you seem to be a permanent resident of Taswegia at the moment.

Well, there might be some small danger of icing up on some of these mornings.

Typhoon, AKA ColdEH, showed us the solution to that particular problem.

And in the spirit of keeping the thread alive, where does the east coast of Australia begin...

my vote :
cape york to gabo island is east coast
gabo to cape leeuwin is south coast
leeuwin to port hedland is west coast
hedland to c.york is north coast

actually i think there is room for healthy debate where the west coast / north coast starts & ends

cheers,

That is a very mainland centric view of Australia .

Assuming we considering the beginning of the east coast of Australia is the northernmost point rather than the southernmost point (which is a different discussion), then surely the northernmost point would be the most northern point of Queensland which of course is not Cape York.

The most northern community of Queensland is Boigu Island which is a little shy of 4 nm south of mainland PNG.

Nevertheless, the most northern point of Queensland (and thus Australia) is Bramble Cay Latitude: 9° 07' 58.80" S Longitude: 143° 52' 1.20" E.

Surely Bramble Cay should be considered as the beginning (or end?) of the east coast of Australia while Cape York gets a guernsey as the beginning (end?) of the east coast of the mainland of Australia.

No????
