Re: Pirate attack Phillipines ?

I found the map in this Pirate report quite interesting as it shows where the concentrations of attack happen

Good graphic. Shows more attacks than I expected. Thanks for sharing.

There have been a bunch of attacks on smaller ships around Singapore in the last year or so. Some were boardings to steal money and possessions from the crew and ship but a few incidents were smaller ships being stolen. The stolen ships I can remember were tankers and they would soon be found without cargo. I have not read any reports about other incidents recently.

Later,
Dan

More sad news ... Last Saturday Abu Sayyaf kidnapped a German couple in the Philippines. The wife was killed ... The same couple was kidnapped in Somalia in 2008 and was in the hand of Somali pirates for 52 days ...

Re: Pirate attack Phillipines ?

What a sad case and tragic end for that cruising couple!

Is there any mention of a specific location where they were taken or boat found? I assume off Mindanao.

But...

Excerpt:
"The Abu Sayyaf, a loose network of militants based on remote southern islands in the southern Philippines, has defied more than a decade of US-backed military offensives against it and gone a lucrative kidnapping spree in recent years.

In 2014, the militants abducted another German couple off a yacht in the southern Philippines. They released the pair six months later after receiving what they said was the full ransom demand of 250 million pesos ($5.1 million).

Islamic militants are planning to kidnap foreigners in tourist hotspots of the central Philippines, roughly 500 kilometres (300 miles) from the Abu Sayyaf's bases, the US government warned last week."

I hope that someday, the governments of the region will say "Enough is enough!" and take serious action to put an end to this. It would appear that they have yet to reach that point.

Re: Pirate attack Phillipines ?

According to BBC, they were at Laparan Island, southern Sulu. If so, they were effectively in a no-go area..

Re: Pirate attack Phillipines ?

...time & again we came across fellow cruisers whose attitude when discussing dangerous areas (dangerous for whatever reasons) were "...you have to go & see for yourself, ...people are exaggerating...I'M not believing any horror-stories...".
We actually once came across a swede who yelled at me when I told him we were shot at in Eritrean waters (& had a bullethole in the mast to prove it, btw).
the germans in this sad story were kidnapped in Somalia before...seems this hadn't taught them a lesson...

Being an observer is hard.
As a medic, I often tell people that their course of action or habits are dangerous, then I sit back and watch them destroy themselves.

The same for travel in certain areas. People are warned that the consequences can be serious.

There are a lot of unfair things and bad people in the world and the idea is to keep away from them.

Results are deadly.

People need to help themselves to stay safe or sad things happen.

My condolences to the family.

Should not have been there.
