Re: POLL: So what is the age here? MERGED

36 in a couple of months. I'm easily one of the youngest people on the water that I've seen. There aren't a lot of "younger" boats but we tend to stick together. I think mainly as a mid-30's family we have kids and so it's not so much the age as it is we're the "kid boat", which is a whole different ball of wax.

My one year old has roughly two thousand sea miles; there just aren't a lot of people out there doing this in my age-kids bracket so when you find them it's pretty special.

Regardless..I would find it worthwhile to know whether people just get tired or whether it's poor health, or family issues that changes things. My father is 79 and still plays tennis and lifts weights and can out walk me. But as he's gotten older he's become unwilling (unable?) to tolerate physical discomfort. He likes his air conditioning and heat..soft beds with no bugs or mold. Doesn't like to leave his wife for long and likes his naps. What a softy he's become.

Heck, sounds like me. That's why I prefer a trawler over a sail boat. I no longer like camping. Actually, I never liked camping....

Lets see, mentally, I'm 24, going on 20, Emotionally I'm 34, sometimes 12, My biological age is... Oh my god, what happened to my body. I didn't they could hang down that far. Where did all those wrinkles come from. I've definitely exceeded my "Best if used by" date. Not quite as old as dirt, but getting there...

30, with no regrets thus far beyond the fact I'm currently living in a boatyard The boat is all I own.. there's no way I could afford it otherwise. Luckily, it's more than enough

VB, it's clear that you are a youngie! I don't have to remember how old I am -- my body reminds me frequently!

Cheers,

Jim

Re: POLL: So what is the age here? MERGED

Just for interests sake...when we started cruising in the 80"s the average age of the people we met were in their 30-40's, much younger crowd than today. Also very very few people back them in their 60's.

I know several cruisers that have tossed out the anchor right around 70, arthritis, bad joints, etc. Also, many 70+ are not very internet savvy, my hat off to those that are!

I think generally life is far more expensive and complicated now in almost every way (in the US at least). Taxes, utilities, gas, food, fees, nearly every single thing. I think that's why the average age of boaters is sliding upward, it takes longer and longer to climb to a point where you can cast off and sail away. Always exceptions of course, but more and more rare.
