One really should research before buying.

And that is the correct chart! It is the official chart and points out that the buoys are not charted because they move so much.

You can get vector charts for iNazX and have the same bad info. Or you can go with the FREE raster charts that look just like paper charts. And you can get charts from a wide variety of vendors so you can get Explorer charts for the Bahamas and NV charts for the Carribean.

The value is not in the display or the device, the primary reason is to get the best charts available.

What I would say about Blue Charts is good riddance to bad rubbish. Very inaccurate from French Polynesia west. I use navionics on the chart plotted and Open CPN at the nav station out of the weather on my laptop. What I really wish is a way to getthe Open CPN with Google Charts on my Ipad.

Re: Poll: Which app do you prefer for navigation via iPad/iPhone

Hi All and thanks for this discussion etc.
I am using an iPad-Mini on my Trailer Sailor which is used on our lakes and rivers in NSW Aust.

I (had) a paid subscription to Navionics and really enjoyed it. If I need to I will probably "pay again" but in my small sailing exposure it is more novelty-based I'm sure.

For some reason I couldn't rely on the stability of Garmin Blue Charts

Reassuring to see others value these navigational facilities etc.

Cheers

Re: Poll: Which app do you prefer for navigation via iPad/iPhone

I went through the St. Augustine inlet using the latest available Navionics sonar charts (that looked very similar to the screen shots) and they were not even close to being accurate just a month or so ago. So, while I love Navionics app, you must take the sonar data with a big grain of salt when they are depicting rapidly changing areas. They do seem to be very good for the ICW though.

My view is dump the ipad, buy something sensible and pay the subscription for the chart software for the next decade with the savings. ipads are decent devices but vastly overpriced. The equivalent in android is literally half the price.
We’ve been using ipads as primary navigation devices for eight years without a problem. Our new boat does have a top-shelf chartplotter, there’s no difference in relliability. The Nobeltec Time Zero charts on our ipads are the same as those on the Raymarine Touch Hybrid with Navionics Platinum+ charts.

+1

We too have been using our Sony Experia Android tablet for the last 3 years with Navionics and sailed from the UK to the Balearics using this alone...we do have a Raymarine RL80 system on board but only use this as a back up or when we need radar... never had any problems at all and it has always proved capable and accurate....

Re: Poll: Which app do you prefer for navigation via iPad/iPhone

Interestingly we have a couple of American friends on a Nordhavn 68 who cruised the Northern Hemisphere Arctic regions in 2016...he has thousand and thousands of dollars worth of navigation plotters on his bridge deck which when he got to so many degrees North stopped working and became totally useless..he ended up having to navigate the last part of his journey through the ice sheets using Navionics and an ipad as that was the only thing that would cover that far North...makes you think !!

Check out Weather4D 2.0. It provides Raster (paper) charts, GRIB overlay with multiple models (GFS, NAM, Global Currents, Wave, etc), routing simulations. A bit of a learning curve but well worth it and very good tutorial available. I also use the Navionics app with Vector charts. It is very good and easy to use. I prefer to have both but tend to rely on Weather4D 2.0 the most. The nice thing about the iPad platform is that is is easy to use multiple apps. I would recommend Navionics and Weather4D 2.0

Does anyone else find it annoying that Navionics only gives True North?

iNavx on the iPad running Navionics charts. I’ve had a few problems with disappearing charts, and I dislike the way they manage their chart licenses. But it has been an excellent backup for years now.

Are there nav apps that download British Admiralty charts?

Weather4D 2.0 pulls from Geo Garage chart library with a subscription. Here is a link to the catalog of worldwide charts available.
