Portable SSB Receiver

Hi All
I’m looking at purchasing a portable SSB receiver
Any thoughts about either the
Tecsun PL 880 and the Sangean ATS 909X
Was also looking at the Sony’s but they are not
available anymore
Which would you buy?
Open to others as well
Cheers
Neil

My dad gave me a Sony a few years ago

works great ... simple long wire ant

and HOLY MACKEREL !!!

I CANT BELIEVE HOW MUCH A SONY COSTS THESE DAYS

Shiver me timbers 450 $

Criminals

I’m not familiar with the other radios

External antenna and external micro phone jack are needed

Normal batteries are nice ...anything connected to the ships power is noisey

Google blackcat for iPhone software to decode navtex and weatherfax radio transmissions

Other suppliers around

My brother is a radio amateur

He has a couple SDR setups

They Work great , but I don’t like them .messy .. . too many pieces and cables plugged into the fragile iPhone plug

The normal sand alone portable is better in your bunk listening to BBC off watch and takes a small space on the chart table

My little Sony has taken plenty of abuse and is still going strong

Re: Portable SSB Receiver

I've got a Tecsun PL-880. Love it to bits, even if just for the FM radio. The rechargable Li battery lasts forever between charges. Not too expensive and the build quality is top notch.

I also have the PL-880 and also love it. It's a great radio, good audio, easy to use, stable operation and the build quality is great.

I have had it for a few years now and use it at home and at sea!

I don't know anything about the Sangean ATS 909X but it would to be vey good to beat the PL-880.

Re: Portable SSB Receiver

I have used the Tecsun at sea to get updated HF weather, both voice and fax. Works well. A bit of frequency searching depending on the time of day/night, but great reception considering the cost. I have a line setup to hoist the thin antenna wire. I had an earlier model Sangean which was not as good, but that would be an unfair comparison as the 909 is an updated model.

Re: Portable SSB Receiver

If you prefer a fixed receiver keep your eye open for a used FASTNET RADIO FMD 55 , built in Germany

Beautiful machine with decoder software built in

http://busse-yachtshop.de/pdf/fastnet-FMD55_Manual.pdf

The beauty of a portable radio is that it’s completely free of the ships electric system

When everything else goes down the portable still works
