Re: Post Collision Repair or Total

For me the decision to make first is the emotion one
"are you out of sailing or not"

If yes then you will know which of 1 and 2 works where you are but if its a line ball then 1 is best/easiest but a combination could win as others have said

if no (or not sure) the question is: " is this the boat you want to keep sailing"

Tough decision -good luck

Re: Post Collision Repair or Total

So long as there's no serious structural damage, sb1 gets to choose how to handle the situation. It may be too soon to make the emotional choice. The events and their sequelae were difficult enough, but he was also libeled by the intoxication remark. Something like that feels hideously demeaning, and man, you want so much to fight back at that! You have to get beyond that before you can decide.

It's the most difficult part of a decision like this, because you won't ever be satisfied if you don't follow your heart and it matters to you and you're afraid your heart may lead you astray. It may take some effort either way to get a clear read. But I really hope sb1 gets it that putting his boat back together may be healing to him, as it was to Jim, and the boat very useful for a few more years (we sold ours about 7 yrs. after our event). And it's fun to have a lovely new spar and beaut new sails, even if it's a drag to figure out a new radar and display, etc.

Especially when one prides oneself on one's financial acumen, it takes a dose of courage to just set all that aside and choose something different that is less explicable to others.

Re: Post Collision Repair or Total

You will be missed here. You have put out some good information. I have been involved in too many projects boats, tractors, houses, the list is long. I am in the process of dumping projects done or not. I would cash out and be done. Or fix it myself and pocket the leftover money, maybe get a used rig from a boat with severe hull damage.
Sorry to hear about your loss.

Might need a coin to toss.

I thought, the way the original question was formulated, that it was a simple NPV excersise.

Sorry for not addressing your intended question.

Re: Post Collision Repair or Total

Well it sounds whether I repair the boat or not the insurance pays me $59,900 and I still own the boat. I currently estimate the repairs at $64,125.

That's with the boat yard doing the work and all new rigging. Someone willing to do the deck fiberglass and rub rail work could save $8k Could be done in the water. And if they source a used mast and boom, still getting 100% new rigging of course, could probably save another $5k.

So now I need to figure out how to get rid of an unrepaired boat.

Great liveaboard. Engine runs perfect and gets 7.5NM/gal. Can be used as is if you want to replace the rigging.

Trying to live aboard while someone is trying to put a new rig on your boat, would be a lot to too tolerate. That is not something that can be done in one day.

I'm assuming the boat would need to be hauled to step a new mast as I don't see this being done in the water, so there is that time and expense to consider.

May be time to shop for a new boat.

I don't see why it would be hauled for that. Normal process at the marina/yard we're based out of is to step and unstep masts in the water (with the boat in the travelift pit, as that's where the gin pole is). I don't think I've ever seen a mast stepped with the boat out of the water anywhere.

Re: Post Collision Repair or Total

Last time I pulled and installed my mast the boat was in the pit.

But hauling and blocking the boat is already in the estimate and is pennies in the big picture!

Re: Post Collision Repair or Total

Having a mast pulled and replaced with the original rig is one thing.

I had the rig replaced on my boat some years back, and it was quite a process, as each shroud/stay had to be done individually.

I had to have my boat hauled to get it done, as all the various mast fittings were done on the mast while laying next to the boat. I had swaged fittings replaced by staloks, requiring new tangs, etc. The mast was pulled and reset by a small mobile crane.

That was my experience. While the boat was out, also had a bottom job done. Maybe a week on the hill all told. I was a liveaboard during this time, always fun at a yard

This guy is an expert at dealing with salvage boats - https://www.lagoonkeepers.org/ ...but he's probably going to charge you something to get rid of it.

Giving it away on Craigslist or Boat Trader may be an option.

If you want to keep it, there are things to consider.

One big question is this - if you spend $65k on repairs, will you end up with a boat that is worth at least that much?

Another big question is - Did this specific boat fit your needs well when it was in good condition?
