Re: Powerball 1.3 billion

Yes, we all know money cannot buy happiness..but, I think we'd all agree that we could be a lot happier if we were not spending our days doing things we do not enjoy so that we can pay our bills and feed ourselves and occassionally do what does make us happy.
I don't personally NEED a lot..fast cars, big houses, etc. But it takes money to own a boat and to move it around the earth as needed to enjoy your life. Imagine not having to worry about where maintenance comes from..where repair money will come from..what will happen when tragedy strikes..whether you can get a new sail, or repair the head...just being able to enjoy a meal and a beer in an out-of-the-way exotic locale without worrying about whether you will need that money for an engine overhaul. Money don't buy happiness, but it buys a little peace of mind that helps you relax and truly live.

I'd take the $825 million lump sum and pay off half my bills.

Re: Powerball 1.3 billion

A modest home on a canal on the Gulf side of Florida, with a boat dock out back. Tied up to the dock would be a new (gasp) trawler, 45-50' range. A small condo in California for visiting the kids. After that TRAVEL TRAVEL TRAVEL, by land, air, and sea.

And of course everyone in our family would be taken care of, especially our kids.

Re: Powerball 1.3 billion

I would take part of the money ($400 million ish lump after taxes) and get myself a nice 50-60 foot mono, perhaps a schooner, maybe even a power boat, shocking I know. I'd take 50% and create a trust to run a halfway house or ten for homeless and/or anchorouts. Or maybe build a village for the homeless. Also help out some of the poorer cruisers out there.

Gee I might buy two or three boats, have Boatie or DOJ watch over one for me in the EU, One downunder and one on the east coast somewhere. Sounds sweet. Of course Tomorrow, I'll wake up with just the Rose and be just as happy.

Re: Powerball 1.3 billion

Since you asked.. Quit the job, fly to the west coast, purchase a big cutter out that way, refurb what's need.. Then cast off to warmer exotic places afar.. following the trades and currents...

Re: Powerball 1.3 billion

A hybrid btw a Paine's Bougainvillea and an IMOCA.

I would hire Bosgraaf to draw it, K&M to build it, alloy or carbon.

A Paradise 60 is close to this perfection, I would end up with a similar boat but one that readily goes on a plane.

Re: Powerball 1.3 billion

Sure thing, I was talking the boat only.

The rest of the money (being something like 99% of the lump sum) I would redistribute back where it is most useful - maybe a good school in an immigrant dense area, maybe a plot of land to be converted into a nature reserve, things like this I think.

No good use when money sits in a bank. No need to keep, given my age and lifestyle.
