Re: Preventing Theft of New Electronics

The solution is simple.

Make the item undesirable to steal.

If you have a good looking new radio or instrument, grab a can of spray paint, mask off the important surfaces and redecorate it! With some gray/brown/green camo paint you can reduce the value of just about anything to zero in no time.

The other alternative is antiquing. Its done with furniture all of the time. Why not do it to your new boat items. One moment they look new, the next moment they look 20 years old! You will know they are brand new, but no one else will! Won't your guests feel stupid when you tell them that your "Antiqued" $7000 camo painted radar unit is actually brand new!

The same goes for anything of value. Make it look like crap and no one will steal it.

Those one way screws are easily defeated with a battery powered dremel, just cut a slot in it, takes a few seconds.

Out of sight, out of mind is my thinking, but insurance is good.

Re: Preventing Theft of New Electronics

There are a couple of FB pages devoted to this, for those so inclined - South Florida Marina and Boat Security Discussion Group.

It's a closed group, so you'll have to join.

As the title says, it is S FL centric - but there may be good ideas there for you

No need for ugly, Dave. Just make it bubble-gum pink, like a Barbie accessory, and if anyone asks remind them that's boats are supposed to be wives, so you bought the lady's model for her. Or you won it from, what's that home cosmetics sales company that awards their sales leaders with pink cars every year?
