Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck?

yeah set up... shot from the boat getting the shave. A club race where folks know each other I imagine. One of the grrls/guys putting out the course markers pre-race agreed to take some "cool vid" of another members' boat in action.

I'd like to the outtakes.......my guess is that 8 out 10 times he could place her within a few feet.

Can't see the harm myself.

Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck ?

Quite amazing to watch how tightly she turns and how fast she picks up on the new tack! Don't try this with your Westsail ;-)))

My vote is for staged and edited afterwards to get that smooth a tack.

Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck ?

No safety issues in my book either. It was clearly staged, the guys on the phot boat looked cool. So I am I.

OK, I'm convinced. Staged.

Are you suggesting the skipper should be charged with a crime?

There was no contact, no damage and in spite of what the edited sound track leads us to think no one, including the person setting the mark seemed to be the least bit concerned. For all we know this was a race crew practicing close quarter turns with their own tender.

I've never had the pleasure to sail on a boat like that, I'm not good enough, but I've sailed in many races near boats like that and I can say without hesitation that I'd rather have one of these guys turning withing 5 feet of my boat then the average cruising boat turning within .5 mile.

Re: Pure Skill or Pure Luck ?

That was a practice turn. They had not set the racing buoy yet. Of course it wasn't safe and the young lady deploying the buoy was in danger of gettting hit by the bowsprit if anything went wrong in their turn. Cutting close to a deployed buoy is a little different than cutting close to a person deploying a buoy. Racing isn't a safety conscious sport and putting someone in danger just for practice seems rather senseless to me.
Of course, that's just my opinion as an old racer.
kind regards,

But it clearly was staged. They had those HUGE bumpers and the one was pulled up outta the way and dropped in again after that turn... The person standing in the stern was very calm, the camera was down low for the best camera angle on the maneuver...

in those circumstances...
