Quarantine Required in Norfolk, Virginia

Giving serious thought to sailing from Honduras to Chesapeake Bay area non stop in the next bit. I'm not up to speed with the different States opening up and if that means the 14 day quarantine requirements have been canceled or still in place?

Would appreciate anyone with local knowledge filling me in. Cheers, R

Have only heard of quarantine in RI and MA, ME if coming on land. Thinking of staying on in Panama ourselves a few more weeks atleast to see how these opening experiments go in various states.

14 day quarantine required in MD for anyone arriving from out of state.

Re: Quarantine Required in Norfolk, Virginia

Your larger concern should be where will you dock or anchor as many marinas are closed, or closed to transients... so suggest you sort that first. Then note that all quarantine laws are different... if you are allowed to go purchase food then the quarantine won’t affect you hardly at all...and it does not stop you from leaving

@Auspicious

Talking to a customer about a job that ends in MD. Are they including the passage in the quarantine period?

Is there a net across the bay? How do they hope to enforce that?

Well the area is full of military bases which implies heavy local law enforcement...

RI has 14 day quarantine for anyone coming from ANYWHERE. Marinas in RI are also not allowed to rent transient slip to out of state boats regardless of quarantine.

Re: Quarantine Required in Norfolk, Virginia

I have been sailing in the lower Chesapeake bay lately and I have helped deliver a boat from out of state. So far there is room in many marinas although many are near capacity. In Virginia I don’t see any special law enforcement and there are no restrictions on recreational boating other than keeping crew numbers low. I would assume that customs has some national level restrictions but I wouldn’t expect any special problems in Virginia once you are cleared into the USA.

Re: Quarantine Required in Norfolk, Virginia

The US has never been serious about maritime borders and certainly is a patchwork start. I'm not suggesting people break the law or sneak into a state if they are sick.

Came from the Bahamas to FL 10 days ago. Checked in with the ROAM app. Moved up the coast anchoring in several different locations along the way. No problems from authorities.

Yes, any American that has entered NZ or Australia by yacht has a true appreciation of that real maritime borders are.

The Governor's executive order indicates quarantine starts when you enter the state. In my case I returned the rental car, my wife picked me up, and we started our own 14 day clock. Enterprise told me they would quarantine the car (!) for three days and have a hazmat contractor come clean it after that. I got the impression the three day hold was driven by the contractor.

In your case, I suspect that getting in a rental car and driving home (leaving Maryland) meets the intent of the requirement.

I found Enterprise to be pretty touchless. Good experience overall.

Are you suggesting that rules without enforcement don't count?

More reports without personal knowledge of state troopers at the border of some states. RI was first I think. The MD/DE border is easy. The C&D canal is not that wide. The MD/VA border is less than 20 miles wide. There are plenty of LEOs who have boats with guns: USCG, DHS, DNRP, county and local police. I don't know that they are out there hunting but they could be.

Why does it matter? The rules are the rules. No recreational boating in MD waters. The only exception I am aware of is for transport "home" from out of state or movement from launch to slip or mooring. I have paperwork from MD DNR for my forthcoming move.

It sounds like a boat left Guatemala for the USA but broke down in Belize. They got a tow into Placencia. It also sounds like they were arrested. There was a warning, "stay 12 miles offshore of Belize"
