Real Blue water Boats

So I'm at Gloucester Ma and went to the Cape Ann Museum this morning. Here on CF the "blue water" boat thing comes up regularly. So I just figured I would post a picture of the first, second, and third boat to solo sail across the Atlantic. Blackburn sailed the larger of the pictured boat for the second and third trip across AND HE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE ANY FINGERS!

Now everyone understands want a wuzzie they are!

Re: Real Blue water Boats

hi, fred rebel sailed 9000 miles across the pacific in an open 18ft dinghy, in the 1930s. made his own passport , chronometer, and sextant out of a boy scout telescope a hacksaw blade and a stainless table knife, and log. his book is escape to the sea. today we are woosies. only my opinion but his feat was incredible ,almost equalling slocum.

Likely hundreds, if not thousands of people made the journey long before any records accessible to us were kept.

I'd have to say without out a doubt, many have made the trip.
Be it on a raft or what we consider a boat.
Just because you can't see the evidence, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Re: Real Blue water Boats

People are losing the point. Look at that first 19’ boat. It doesn’t even have storage really and some on a dare was sailed solo across the Atlantic in the 1890s. So Backburn to prove he was studier did it twice on “ big” boat and he didnt have any fingers.

Yet here we are forever arguing about what it takes for a modern boat to be blue water. Good thing there was no internet back then.

Re: Real Blue water Boats

The point: real Water boats">blue water boats.

Moore 24, Webb Chiles sailed around the world in one. Gannet.

The full keel bull... is of the past.

Re: Real Blue water Boats

On sailing ships before steam, the "main brace" of the ship was her crew.

On the whaling ship, "Daisy" from Nantucket in 1912, Robert Murphy describes the tradition of "splicing the main brace" by giving each crew member a tot of rum.

No ship, however well-found, will make the voyage without capable crew.

A better term might be, Blue Water Sailor.
