Re: Recommend me some ripping yarns about sailors crossing the Atlantic Ocean or simi

This book chronicles several sea survival stories:

"Survivor" by Michael Greenwald

Published by Blue Horizon Press

It goes into great detail about what happened, how it happened, where it happened and how survivors coped after their particular mishap.

How about any post or thread on this forum by Chotu? He ranges from stoner girlfriend to being ripped off by a yacht rigger/tradesmen and everything in-between. He's certainly kept us all entertained over the years.
Cheers

"Heavy Weather Sailing" by K. Adlard Coles. An anthology of British yachting yarns, told with typical British understatement and dry wit. Get one of the older editions and enjoy stories from the good old days, before weather satellites, GPS and Starlink took all the sport out of cruising.

This may be an obvious suggestion, but start off with the first solo Atlantic crossing ever, Joshua Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around the World". There are also several good audio book versions of his yarn.

Re: Recommend me some ripping yarns about sailors crossing the Atlantic Ocean or simi

I've read two truly great books about crossing the Atlantic: Airborne, by William F. Buckley, and Atlantic: the last great race of princes, by Scott Cookman.

Love him or hate him, W.F. Buckley was a great writer. And a bit nutso as a sailor (aren't we all?). Airborne is the story of his first crossing of the Atlantic aboard his 60 foot yacht Cyrano. There is a piano and extensive wine cellar aboard, as well as his crew. But don't let those creature comforts fool you: this was a pre-gps, satellite communication voyage, and Buckley took his responsibilities as captain seriously. Funny and sentimental. A great read.

Atlantic is about the 1905 Kaiser's Cup transatlantic challenge race. This was the race where the schooner Atlantic set the transatlantic sailing record that stood until some high tech trimaran beat it 75 years later. A Gilded Age tale of millionaires and their ambitions (and their yachts). The story of how they "coaxed" a great America's Cup skipper out of retirement for the race is truly heart-breaking. I reread this book every few years.
