Refitting/ Upgrading an Allied Princess Ketch

Hi everyone, I am a newbie to sailing which I have not done enough of. I have an Allied Princess 36FT Ketch. I am in the process of replacing OEM parts that have either stopped working, gone bad, etc, repairing stuff and rebedding where needed, stanchions, chain plates, leaks basically!

I purchased her "bare" so there are no electronics except a depth sounder. Budget is very tight so each and every electronic Item I buy will be monthly. I have picked up ICOM M412 radios and Transceiver and a ICOM M424 Radio and Transceiver as backup (yet to be installed).

Two things I would greatly appreciate, firstly I want to replace the old manual hand pump toilet for a composting toilet and is it possible to install a dodger given how low the boom is!

Any suggestions and ideas are greatly appreciated

Mo

I had a Princess and it had a dodger, no issues at all. Did you mean a bimini under the mizzen boom?

No a dodger, however I am thinking of the possibility of a Bimini below the mizzen. Would having both be to much (holes in the deck?)

Would a radar tower interfere with the movement of the mizzen, instead of a Bimini?

If your main boom is attached to the mast in the original position a dodger should fit without issue. Contact Island Nautical in Florida they have made many dodgers for Princesses. The can send you the dimensions of the frame and you can go from there.

My radome was mounted on the mizzen mast.

Island Nautical used to be City Island at the western end of LI Sound. When Allieds were delivered to the Sound or points east many would stop at Island Nautical for dodger fitting.

Kato Marine, in Annapolis is an outstanding fabricator, and very close to you, but "budget" is not part of their description. On the other hand, you will never regret the money. Their work is peerless.

X2 on Island Nautical. My last two boats had IN spray hoods/dodgers.

The mizzen mast is a great place to mount a radome and a wind generator. And to hold up the mule once in an while.

Re: Refitting/ Upgrading an Allied Princess Ketch

Thanks everyone for your advice. It was a busy Friday afternoon thru noon Sunday working on zillions of spider cracks of various sizes. And there is more filling and sanding to do!

Myself and a very good friend (experienced sailor) is helping and teaching me how to repair and replace things cleanly and properly. I'm paying as well. We rebedded 5 chainplates after inspecting every deck chain plates.

Our attention is to inspection the spreaders, one is loose so we have planned to trips. First trip is to inspect the spreader to determine its condition, the second trip is to fix it and or replace it.

Re: Refitting/ Upgrading an Allied Princess Ketch

Hi everyone, I have removed the original main sail to determine whether or not it can be stitched, patched, repaired/saved or replaced!

In the event I have to replace it what is the best way to measure the or a sail?

In my opinion, since you don't know the origin of the sail or how much it may have stretched in the luff and foot, it is always best to actually measure the rig. Most online sail outfits have measurement sheets on their websites.
