Yea, I'm already out. And I want out of this thread too. I just came to make points about this entire argument missing the fact about what constitutes a Personal Signal Flag, not have a political debate. No offence to you.

Re: Religious Commercial or Political Personal Signal Flags at Marina slip

This would be a fairly contentious subject whether in your neighborhood or at the marina. Perhaps a suitable approach might be to restrict the SIZE of non-nationality and maritime flags.
Each of us has our right to express our views, but a 4’x 6’ flag is in excess.

None taken.. but truth be told all flags are a statement of political/tribal affiliations apart from the joke flags like the Jolly Roger which has been glamorised by Hollywood.
Personal Flags flown by the general public are in the main affectations to satisfy egos.. kinda like me having a Chindit flag made..
On non owner assist deliveries I often fly the CF pennant and on the odd occasions the flag of Coimbra at the stern.. should see the head scratching when folks cannot identify it..

Well, in British Columbia 20 years ago, we came across a boat with an unusual name in letters 6 inches high all along each side of the boat:

"I'LL NEVER BUY ANOTHER BENETEAU AGAIN!"

I'd say, ignore the content of the flags. Perhaps limit the size if you don't want people to crash their cars on the nearby road...

What's wrong with pirate flags? That's clear discrimination against pirates. William Dampier is mightily upset and turning in his grave!

As for commercial flags, would that extend to corporate sponsorship to Americas Cup and other events?

Well. It all depends. Doomed if ignorant, but could elect to wake up and think.

From a linguist's point of view, flags are language. (Dress code is another).

And according to some propositions, your language makes you. This refers to both the cultural values (inherited from somewhat different religious factors intrinsic to each language) and then the language of your social strata (liberal, right, left, etc) and then more specifically the language used in your family and your peer group (just think of teens' jargon).

So it all makes you. And flags being language make you to, like it or not. Grow up in a country full of swastikas, and you are bent to think communism is a criminal offense. Grow up in a place with many red flags full of golden stars (or even worse, black eagles each with two heads and six crowns ...) and you are something else.

Along the same lines we will call a sheet a sheet and a halyard a halyard. And we fly the country ensign at the stern and the Q flag when arriving ...

Flags are language. You can chose your language and the one you have chosen will make you.

I am too on the 'humanity is doomed' wagon. Even worse, I believe if microplastics and CO2 do not get us, flags will.

Failure to show ANY consideration for the other side is a pretty clear indication that the deep US political divide is nowhere near a resolution.

Re: Religious Commercial or Political Personal Signal Flags at Marina slip

There is a reason that our First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech. I do not fly political flags, for no particular reason, but I see plenty. And any of those flags worry me less than people who worry about them. It's kinda like those dirt dwellers who can't stand sailboats in the water in front of their houses. When I was a kid, I was privileged to hear a brilliant sermon about things like this. In a nutshell, the Message was that no one can offend you unless you choose to take offense. True. It concerns me when people do choose to take offense, which many do. It leads to things like this post and also the PC mantra.

Its a flag.

Perhaps we are raising generations of people who are far too easily offended.

Re: Religious Commercial or Political Personal Signal Flags at Marina slip

I believe in the first amendment. It is important particularly related to political speech. I am personally sickened and offended by flags on boats at my marina promoting our current anus in chief but I am more alarmed about people trying to restrict political speech and people trying to gerrymander the voting process. I wish people had the common decency to leave the political messages ashore and allow a non polarized atmosphere at the marina. But people have the right to voice their political choice even if I think they are jerks about it.

I believe in free speech, but only on certain topics that I agree with and only in places I deem acceptable.
Doesn't quite sound like free speech does it?
