Retiree traditional weekender/daysailor ideas?

My bride and I just bought a place “back home” on Mobile Bay AL in retirement. She has boated her entire life here and I have 2/3rd’s of mine.i’m beginning my search for “the right boat”. If I’m not the King of boat porn, I’m at least a high ranking longstanding member of the court.Given this however, my mental search thus far isn’t coming up with much. Let me set the stage and then I’ll look forward to suggestions.
I’m a traditional boat lover AND a lover of maintaining and doting on them. I love gaff rigged, but for reasons on the priority list below I’ll probably forego those. She needs to be “different” but only in a traditional way. It’s getting easier to be different in this way given the growing disdain by the shrinking sailing popular toward boats that need Brightwork attention. That happens to be my most therapeutic pastime, but I’m rare in that regard.

I think that pretty much describes me, so for the list of characteristics, in a somewhat highest to lowest ranking.
1. Shallow draft. Drawing no more than 4ft. Centerboard would be nice.
2. Cockpit for 4 minimum.
3. Either rigged for all sail tending in the cockpit, or adaptable to such.
4. Must have at least something for me to varnish.
5. Probably a minimum LWL of 22 ft. Many say a little longer to handle the “Mobile Bay chop”, but I’d do 22.
6. Easily singlehanded.
Now the list of “wants” but not dealkillers if no.
1. Inboard diesel. Older I get the less I’m going to want to fool with an outboard, plus I don’t like the look of an engine hanging off of most boats I’d want.
2. Cuddy cabin at a minimum. Almost listed this above but think it’s going to apply to most of what I’d consider anyway.
3. Trailerable. Like the flexibility of loading her up and taking her somewhere different for a spell, but she will be kept in a slip.
4. Glass hull. Would consider all wood boat as long as she’s in great shape. Other than Brightwork or maybe hull painting needs I’m not looking for a project.
Lastly, things that don’t matter.
1. Location. That’s as long as in the US or Canada. I’d enjoy the challenge of getting the right boat back to AL pretty much regardless of where she is.

Thanks. Yes those are fine looking boats. A bit pricey but you are correct I didn’t mention a budget. Almost did but decided to not add to what was already novel length post��
Budget depends on if I can ever sell my 40 ft gaff rigged schooner, (I’m living example of a boat owner with a boat that is desired by precious few people) and our Trawler which we will be selling when we finish the great loop in the fall.
I didn’t list trailerable as a must just a plus. As soon as I posted originally I thought of the Edney& Duff Seahorse . Just refreshed my memory on those and they will be on my list.

Marshall 22. They're originally from the 1960s but the company is in MA and still building them. And there is a lively used market here in New England at least. I answered an ad on CL for a boat part and when I drove to buy it, turned out to be Marshall Marine, alive and kicking. Met the current owner, very nice guy.

Great looking boat. Didn't know it came as a sloop - which is probably faster than the cat rigged version. I'd keep the self-tacking jib but remove the club; going downwind the club on the jib would weigh it down and keep it from filling well in light air.

How about a cat ketch? Herreshoff or Freedom. Easy sailing, most, if they have survived this long, have probably had significant upgrades. Traditional in a different way 😎

Another vote for Marshall catboats. Even the 18 is surprsingly roomy in the cockpit, and they sail all over here in New England. More seaworthy than many small boats.

Not a lot of options for a trailerable 22 footer with an inboard diesel. Sounds like you are a bit flexible on being able to trailer. That does open up options a bit, though diesels don't really show up until you get over 25 feet.

Thanks to all of you and these are great suggestions! Yes, I agree. The trailer will part at 22 feet is a bit of a challenge. Will begin looking at the Marshalls.

Cape Dory's are always a nice choice. Lots of 22's and standard 25's out there and the 25D with its diesel and standing headroom has always been a favorite of mine.

And of course there's always the Flicka 20. Man I love those. Easily trailerable too.

Yes. Have my eye on a 25 localy that seems to need “just the right amount of tlc”.
