Re: Rimas 2nd circumnavigation attempt off Fiji

OCTOBER 17, 2017. TIMED AT 0305 UTC - I have been in contact with Saipan Port Police, the Guam Coastguard and also the Saipan 24 hour TV News station and all the messages I have received "suggest" that it is indeed Rimas Meleshyus onboard "MIMSY" that has been towed into Saipan with a broken mast. More news to follow

interview video here, found safe after 137 days at sea!

Well, if nothing else, you have to admire his tenacity. First person to circumnavigate by being towed in a broken boat.

I have to say that I am glad he is okay.

He looked to be in pretty good condition for someone lost at sea for 137 days.

Does Rimas have someone managing his Facebook page?

Just had to go look at the crazy Rimas thread on SA. They are going crazy as could be predicted.

Re: Rimas 2nd circumnavigation attempt off Fiji

The helicopter pilot who attempted to rescue him commented on my boat log. It really puts Rimas's concept of "docking by mayday" into perspective:

That is an good read from the chopper pilot. The key take aways are:
Quote:
.. …in between Rimas notifying my swimmer of his Facebook followers and Instagram handle, he said he couldn’t leave his boat.
Quote:
.... I don’t normally like to write about the stuff I do at work and I promise you this isn’t grand standing…it’s a guy that is pissed off that I had to put my crew and especially my swimmer in harms way for this guy. His “adventure” is going to eventually cost a life, and while most likely it will be his God forbid it’s somebody trying to help him when he cries wolf and is just looking for a free ride to port.

Re: Rimas 2nd circumnavigation attempt off Fiji

Rimas posted a video interview Sheri Riggs did with him on his Facebook page where he describes his sail to Saipan.

https://www.facebook.com/rimas.meleshyus

He and Mimsy apparently departed Saipan for Guam in early December. Maybe somebody else can confirm that. Rimas says he plans to sail to Japan this year.

Happy New Year, Rimas.

Re: Rimas 2nd circumnavigation attempt off Fiji

It's tough to say at any given moment whether Rimas is alive or dead.

Sherri Riggs confirmed that he left Saipan in mid-December. I heard he was headed for Guam, and I heard he was interested in going to Japan, but when he last left Hawaii he said he was headed for Alaska and started off due south, eventually winding up in Saipan via Fiji...his stated destination rarely has anything to do with where he ends up.

There is something to be said for going with the flow, but Rimas takes that to the extreme.

While I dont approve of his reliance on SAR resources to do basic stuff like make landfall...I almost hate to admit that I sorta like his pure love of being underway (if you can call it that) offshore.

I am a total "live and let live" sort of person when it's done in the spirit of doing you're own thing, but Rimas has wrung that out of me. He is not "[relying] on SAR resources" as much as he is not willing to figure out how to be a good seaman; but much more importantly, he is putting those "SAR resources" (i.e., young coasties) in harm's way. They do their job and love it; yes, but I'm with that pilot -- someone is going to get killed from Rimas' antics. He needs to be put ashore and not allowed to own a boat again.

Re: Rimas 2nd circumnavigation attempt off Fiji

Someone always pays the price. I'm much more selective with who I help these days, I've come to the conclusion that I'm going to get hurt due to some fools incompetence.

This chap maybe a nice guy and a entertaining story BUT his history suggests he's irresponsible and survives on others charity and good will.

Lifters and leaners, leaners get their asses saved in many areas of life by lifters......its just no longer entertaining for me.

Yes, I agree with that 100%. I find him somewhat amusing, but he really should not be at sea and placing others at risk. I would be fine with a global "no rescue for Rimas" policy.
