Roller reefing / furling sails
Seems like a good idea for a newbie sailor to have this setup.

Newbie or not!
Anytime your short handed it's a good thing to have. There are those though who swear by the hank-ons' but I can imagine having a sudden gust come up when your singlehanding and have to fight the thing down. That's dedication!
