Stu, Uncivilized and Michael, Thanks much for the info. Looks like to do them right they could be a lot of work. But if it saves the sails I would say it is worth it. But as Uncivilized points out, there is a downside to everything!

Once they get salty, they become great dirt catchers, sorta like a dust mop. Spread dirt on the sails. It's not just the windage.

I wonder if the OP was after spreader boots, baggywrinkle, or like the title says "a rub rail, or protection on spreader?"
