One doesn't need to know how to use winches to know how to sail.
They aren't related.
If you know what it takes to get the boat moving forward you know how to sail.

I believe sailing small boats teaches you more about actual sailing than big boats.

The principals are the same the Reaction time is much more critical with small boats.... You get it wrong you get thrown out, not too big a problem.
That happens on big boats too.... But it's a much larger ordeal as you really aren't as safe in those situations.... You don't just get back in.
In any case, sailors know this simple rule, everyone has their own comfort level and ability.
Don't Judge!
Small boats are awesome!
Try sailing one backwards! They learn this in small boat classes.
If you don't know why?
You may not know how to sail very well. And, it can cost you your big boat with those fancy winches.
