I can help with this one. On the NHC website, an area with potential for development is marked with an 'X', yellow or red, depending on likelihood of formation.

Thank you guys for all the replies.
Sorry it took me so long to answer. Internet wasn't an option lately.
To your question: I'm in Mexico. Weather going up here was splendid! Alberto is long gone and he left a beautiful weather behind him.

Hope we'll get a nice weather window on our way back down later on.

Really appreciate all of your responses!

We are in Cancun heading south Saturday. Can you provide any updated info on clearing out in southern Mexico? We are getting different reports on the last place south to clear out of Mexico. thanks

It was originally "Invest 90L" (area of investigation 90L).

Re: Sailing in Mexico

WTF is going on with MX info? You CAN NOT check in or out south of Puerto Moraleos. I met a boat who heard they could check out in Xcalak and tried it! It's been 15 years since you could do that They were really screwed in San Pedro , BZ. Ended up sailing to Chetamal,MX with a 4.5' draft. I don't understand what's going on. This should be old news.

Re: Sailing in Mexico

From NoonSite:

"Xcalak - a popular clearance port for vessels sailing between Mexico and Belize - is no longer a port of entry. The immigration office in Xcalak has been closed indefinitely. The options are to either take a 5 hour bus journey inland to Chetumal or forgo the cruising grounds along the east coast and conduct clearance procedures at a port on the north of the Yucatan peninsular, such as Isla Mujeres."

http://www.noonsite.com/Countries/Mexico

They do still list Puerto Morelos as a possible port of entry, but its dated info (2011)

Re: Sailing in Mexico

Don't forget Cozumel. It is pretty easy to clear in or out there!

Puerto Morelos is a commercial shipping port. They unload containers with a mobile crane there. I would think there would always be the port officers around. I think you can only do the check in/out if you are in the El Cid marina though.

You need to leave your boat exposed at anchor in Cozumel to do the check in there. Isla Mujeres is the normal place to check in or out. You can check on your boat during the good part of the day that it will probably take to check in or out. It's way easier to use an agent, they know all the port people and get the job done much quicker. I think I paid $150 US to check out ,check in is maybe $250, with an agent. There are so many holidays in MX. Either the bank is closed or the port people are off. An agent can handle the closed bank part as they are able to handle the money when the bank is closed. You need to pay to enter and leave MX.

Re: Sailing in Mexico

So, to cruise the SE coast of Yucatan, you just check out further N and take your chances or is there a process for this?

Re: Sailing in Mexico

Not so much a process but it's understood how long it can take. I have been questioned on both ends, BZ an MX on why it took me so long. All it takes is a straight answer to where you have been. There are not that many places to stop south of Cozumel anyway. I did manage to spend almost 3 weeks getting from Isla Mujeres, MX to Big Creek, Belize for check in this last trip and I had to explain that I was on my own, tired and the sea state sucked sometimes.
