Sailing Restrictions

Hello all and thank you for welcoming me to this board. I just have a few questions and wondering if anyone can help answer them.

Has anyone sailed with or have had experience with sailing with someone who is a convicted felon and a registered sex offender? Any problems going to countries or being denied access because of it? Any coast guard problems? I know of the customs problems they face when they come back into the USA.

You need to Google visa entry laws for felons for the country's you may be considering entering. I'm curious as to why you said there would be difficulty re-entering the USA. If he is a US citizen why would he have a problem coming back home?

Re: Sailing Restrictions

First question, is this person a US citizen? Then, can this person get a passport? If yes to both then returning to the US will not be a problem. The person might get pulled for closer inspection, body search or maybe luggage checked for child porn or similar.

As far as travel to other countries, depends. Contrary to popular believe, outside the US all the countries are different and have different laws. Some countries, Australia for one, require you to fill in a form that includes questions about your legal background. I think a felony arrest will exclude you from entry. Canada I think may be similar. Other countries, if you have US passport then I guess the figure if the US lets you travel then they will let you in.

You will need to research each one separately.

Re: sailing restrictions

He is a US citizen and does have a US passport. Customs just harass's him for extra screening and stuff. We have done research but really couldnt find anything solid. We thought we would ask if anyone had problems or knew of any problems. We have read stuff about people flying into countries and being escorted off planes and put on the next flight back to USA. But we couldnt really find anything about sailing. We have traveled vis auto to Canada and didnt have a problem getting in, but that was back in 2006. We have traveled to mexico via auto in 2015 and didnt have a problem, ( also have to get a work visa for Mexico)

But thank you for all that responded to this.

Re: Sailing Restrictions

If people are curious, the conviction happened back in 1999 and it was for possession of CP. He was 25 back then.

Re: Sailing Restrictions

Maybe an idea of the countries you might visit? As mentioned, every country is different so if you can say which ones then you could get some specific advice.
