Sailing US east coast

Hi
My wife and I are considering a trip from Lake Ontario through New York Canal system and south along US east coast. We would like to go South in the fall and return North in the spring. Someone told us with the winds it was near impossible to sail North in the spring. Can anyone tell me where to find weather or wind directional history for east coast.
Thank you,
Ken

That route timing is followed by hundreds of Canadian boats each year and is easy as long as you have time to pick your weather and winds.

You will find the pilot charts at Sailing Weather - Marine Weather Forecasts for Sailors and Adventurers - PassageWeather listed by month of the year for the North Atlantic. It also gives you 7 days of predicted wind and waves and is what I use for East Coast weather/route planning.

I correlate the winds with the weather maps from Intellicast - Local and National Weather Forecast, Radar, Maps and Severe Report.

I use Visual Passage Planner to determine prevailing winds per month: Digital Wave - Products

But for coastal trips this interactive map from a site for aviators may do the trick: www.windhistory.com/map.html

Actually, what you're describing, is more or less what Tom Neale, who sometimes writes for "Cruising World" does/did. And he & his wife raised their family along the way, doing so.
He's published a few books as well, including "All in the Same Boat".
