Same here, almost everywhere is a hard hat zone.
Ditched the Bimini my boat came with, made a solid one and attached solar and the boom gallows to it.
Perfect!

Re: Screw Boom Gallows and The Person Who Invented Them

I am assuming of course that you have created an alternate way to support the boom when not sailing and relieve the tension on the various lines that head upward from the boom. Otherwise, you may have a difficult time with various required maintenance.
The boom does not always make a boom noise. It was more like a whomp! when an accidental jibe caused the schooner main boom (33 feet long) to sweep me out of the cockpit and out over the Pacific ocean. I did manage to hold onto various reefing lines until an alert helmsman managed to create the reverse movement of the boom. I did let go at an appropriate moment and then made a different series of noises as I "stuck" the landing.
The reason for the gallows is to support the boom when not under sail. If you can achieve this function in another manner, go ahead and engineer away.

Don't have to engineer anything, it'd been done:

Backstay hook
Topping lift
Main Halyard
Solid Vang
Hydraulic Vang system
Probably a few others

Or you can stick with a 1900's solution

1900s?

Smells like a weak attempt to re-write history.

Boom gallows have been in use - and that use has been documented - since before 1769.

Some folks just take longer to figure things out, it's called the "school of hard knocks!"
