Screw Boom Gallows and The Person Who Invented Them

I have hit my head on them for the last time. The are gone tonight. The wife is over it too. I have split my head open, and today about knocked myself out. Anyone else feel the same?

Now that the gallows is gone you can more easily hit your head on the boom itself...

yep, trying to duck to avoid getting your head beat up by a boom or boom gallows means you are likely to stub your toe..fall....break an arm....a leg...???

Sounds like a demon boat to me.....only one answer here....sell the boat.....take up knitting...

LOL!

You've all probably heard that teaching cue:

"It's called a boom because that's the noise it makes when it hits your head."

Ba-dump-bump.

I, too, say screw the boom gallows and the horse that it came in on!

Our Tayana had a gallows, but it was over the dodger so we never had that problem. It made a great place to grab as you were getting out of the cockpit to go forward

I suggest you shave your head like I do. I tell folks The reason I do is that “it’s easier to put bandaids on.

This is the reason they call it Boom. Boom goes your head every time you hit the darn thing. I feel your pain.

Our Westsail had a boom gallows and found it right handy thing to have. Having the boom in a fixed position was a wonderful safety feature that prevented more injuries and near falls than I can count and I never banged my head on it once. A really welcome hand hold when hauling in the meat hook and doing anything in the stern.

You obviously took the Dodger off too............ Love the gallows.

You'll miss it the first anchorage with a slow low roll, the boom will be "scree...scree...scree" at 2 am.

Re: Screw Boom Gallows and The Person Who Invented Them

Yep. It may have been designed or located wrong but a well-designed and located one is really a blessing that I would not want to do without. I originally had one made from bronze castings and a wood cross piece but when I built the hard dodger I incorporated it into that. In both cases it was never in the way or something I would hit my head on. I would never forego the very real sense of safety of a boom firmly set in a gallows while on the rooftop working on the main. I think you are throwing the baby out with the bath water. So take a good, hard look and see how to change it rather than dispose of it.

Re: Screw Boom Gallows and The Person Who Invented Them

Funny, I'd like to put a boom gallows on my boat - the squeaking of the boom at anchor or motoring into the wind is maddening. My solution was to lash the boom (very tightly) to a cleat on the genoa track, but that is probably not an optimal solution.
