we could bring her back to the uk but i am inclined to sell her while she is out there. The market seams ok. will we get a better price if we take her up to the mainland florida /fort lauderdale ?

import

If the boat has never been in the US or paid the customs duties you will be liable for those upon importing the boat into the US. The country of origantion will determine the import duties. You will also have to buy a bond and for us it was nearly $1,400 US (non refundable).

Either you or the buyer will have to pay them to keep the boat in the US waters.

You can have a boat doc'd in the US and not ever pay duties if the boat doesn't go into the US. You are only liable upon importing into the US.

We went through the import process buying our Voyage Yacht. Becuase it from South AFrica there was a minimal duty, not like some other countries on the list.

Take a look and determine the extra value. The additonal cost of the duty and the bond may not be worth the gain or the hassel.

What's often done with foreign flag vessels is to bring it in on a cruising permit and advertise it for sale "not in the USA". This is to get around the fact that duty is to be paid when the vessel is "offered for sale" not when it's sold.

Hi John

Since Your boat is regestered in the Bahamas, how long can you keep the boat in Fl before you have to pay tax? How long is a usa crusing permit? Can you keep the boat in Fl & at the end of your cruising permit can you go to the Bahamas again for a few days then back to Fl? WHat does it cost to be flagged in the Bahamas?

Phil Berman

Phil Berman lists cats and finds owners all over the world. He has an in-depth knowledge of the cats and the manufacturers. I recommend him.
