Shag Island Cruising Yacht Club

A friend of mine started SICYC almost as a joke a few years ago. It now has some 5,000 members in 14 countries around the world and has become the single biggest donor to testicular cancer research in Queensland, Australia. It has a minimal lifetime fee and every member is a Vice Commodore. The last weekend of August sees the start of a Rendezvous party lasting 4 days. It happens at the Glouster Passage, North Queensland in the Whitsundays. Drop an anchor there if you're nearby.

"SICYC is a not for profit incorporated Association and its primary charity is The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). Over the past six years, just over $614,000 (Aust) has been raised by SICYC and its members to promote for Prostate Cancer Research and Awareness."

You have a smart friend. It's great what all of you are doing, and I'm sure you're also getting a lot of fun memories from it. That what life's all about - Good luck.

Shag Island? Sounds like my kinda place--

I damn near drowned not far from Gloucester Passage--engine failure on a lee shore and about seventy kilometers an hour forward of the beam--but that is another story.

The reality is usually less than romantic, any place with "Shag" in it's name is almost bound to be unpleasantly messy and odoriferous.

Re: Shag Island Cruising Yacht Club

Shag Islet itself isnt very spectacular. But it's right next to a couple of quite nice resorts.

The annual rendezvous keeps getting bigger. We were at the second one, around 70 boats attended. Now its well over 200.

Re: Shag Island Cruising Yacht Club

Just by co-incidence the term 'Shag' also means a party for boats - but that is in The Carolina's in the U.S.A.
But ... a party is a party is a party ... have fun.
Was on my agenda for this year however not to be.
Sorry to be missing it.

"Shag" can also refer to a specific species of the shag or cormorant bird family, a fabric typically used to make deep-pile carpets (or a hair style), a party and fundraiser for an engaged couple (stag & doe), a tobacco cut, or several dance styles (including Carolina shag).

And for those not familiar with UK/Aus/NZ (and other?) usage, it's also a euphemism for a very pleasurable physical activity between two (usually!) people.

Having both been to Launceston as well as partaken in the odd Cascade now and again I get the joke (not everyone here will!)

But not being able to spell beer at all is also why some would say that's why in Australia it's called XXXX
