Singing Boom?

It seems that my boom is singing. I don't think it is the rigging. Some sort of weird resonance that builds up. It is quite loud down below. Inside the cabin I can feel the mast vibrating with the "song". I hear it coming out of the aftend of the boom when I am in the cockpit. It is starting to get a bit annoying.I tried moving the boom around a bit did not seem to kill the noise.

Thoughts?

Re: Singing Boom?

I had this but realised it was due to the vang and main sheet being too tight (to stop 'banging and swinging etc) .. I loosened them, the singing stopped..

1+ Loosen the main sheet a bit.
If you look at your topping lift line as the wind blows over it you will see it vibrate or hum like a guitar. Just like a guitar, when you loosen the strings it stops making a sound.

Re: Singing Boom?

It is your topping lift. I have the same problem and easing it did not cure it. It just made the boom swing more, which made another noise.

Take a free halyard and wrap it around the topping lift few times. This will disturb the air around the toppling lift and stop it from humming.
It works and it is easy.

Or.. just lay the boom on the side you don't use..

Re: Singing Boom?

Well one of my "todo's" this trip is to replace the rigid vang. Hopefully the new to me one is big enough (may be 1 size smaller than my current broken one). SOOO I am off to do that now... with the new vang I may not need the topping lift! Wish me luck. As is any slap in place simple easy replacement job, I am sure it will turn into something else entirely. Gotta love boats. =P

Re: Singing Boom?

well sh!t3!! the new to me vang is indeed 1 size smaller...and with my big heavy boom I am not even going to try it... I will have to buy a new one grrr. Ohh well. BUT it is definitely the topping lift. I put my hand on it and could feel the vibrations. Thanks for the heads up... now to fix it right when I have the $ to spend on the new kit.
