Re: Steve & Linda Dashew retire

The environmental issue concerning large power boats really belongs in its own thread. I've started one here: Should Large Power Boats be Banned? - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

Re: Steve & Linda Dashew retire

Actually I've been designing and restoring old townhouses for 35 years. To start with this form of housing is most efficient use of land and with its shared walls, is inherently energy efficient. We've always been trying to drive down energy use as we restore these properties. We do small things like have one prius, and join errands into one trip, etc. We replaced an 37 yr boiler with a high efficiecy boiler recently and have done other energy projects recently. We sail. Solar and wind should be more a part of our plan and there is a lot more we could do, like build a smaller net zero house, and not fly planes!

Re: Steve & Linda Dashew retire

PS I'd really like to design and build new net zero townhouses and why not extend that concept to net zero boats.

While I'm at it reuse of materials in townhouses is a huge savings, rather than tear it down and start over. Leed recognizes this too. We have entirely too much good stuff going to the dump. We are a hugely wasteful society, spoilt by the short term nearsighted btus in in old plant material.

I believe the Dashews had their own unique angle on efficiency and that was why I was fascinated by their website and would always check in to see one of their designs well represented during design and construction. I liked set-sail!

I'd like to wish the Dashews a happy retirement and thank them for their excellent books, their excellent website SetSail and for their positive contributions to the boating world.

I'd also like to say to those who want to hijack this thread and preach the sermons of the sect of the low-carbon god, save it for the pulpit of your church, wherever that might be. Religion is a private matter and I don't appreciate being preached at with pious and sanctimonious opinions.
