Surveyor needed in Cuba

Hi all,
We're considering buying a boat which is currently sitting in Cuba.
Does anybody here have a recommendation for a surveyor there?
Cheers.

Re: Surveyor needed in Cuba

I think you would need to bring in a professional or move the boat to some place with a yachting infrastructure and community which would make the career choice financially feasible. You do not want someone qualified to survey naval craft involved in surveying your yacht.
Your insurance underwriters may have a list of acceptable surveyors in close proximity.

Re: Surveyor needed in Cuba

We (Canadians) tried to do a survey in Cuba for a Canadian. We gave up after weeks of bafflegab from the Cuban Consulate in Toronto and we have no embargo with them.

I can't imagine the bureaucratic political nightmare it would take to fly in a US surveyor.

Yeah, I figured that might be in the too hard basket, with all the travel restrictions.
Not having any luck find a local one either, might have to do it myself.. (I am a boat builder, and yes, I know that doesn't qualify me as a surveyor, but at least I have some of the skill set).

Maybe these will help ...
Marine Survey 101, pre-survey inspection
Moisture Meter Mythology and Flir thermal imager

What kind of boat ? ... or would you rather not say right now.

Re: Surveyor needed in Cuba

No insurance company is going to accept a "self survey" under any circumstance if you plan to insure it. And they will all require a survey.

Yeah, I'm aware, but it's not looking like I have much choice at this stage.
Worst case scenario is we sail it uninsured to somewhere nearby where we can get one done..

Ever been to Cuba? Nothing is available. They don't drive 60-70 year old cars because they're cool. I doubt the locals even know that marine surveyors exist.

Nothing to loose at all if he needs a bunker survey, onload/offload or cargo survey
