Swains Reef QLD

Anyone been out there?

Just checking to see if its worth the trip and how much protection there is from the never ending large southerly winds here.

Any particular reef suggestions would be appreciated

Re: Swains Reef QLD

Yes, been there (it’s a large area - we only stopped a few days at the very southern end at Sweetlip reef). With good visibility you can tuck right into shallower lagoons.

No protection from the wind but the reefs break up and flatten the swells. Depending on wind direction you may have several miles of wind chop. Settled weather is preferred, though makes travel out there and back slower.

Worth it? That’s in the eyes of the beholder. Unlike the Bunker Group, which has a bunch of nice reefs and islands and moorings closer in, this is remote and that’s much of the thrill. No land, no lights, probably no other boats.
