Its going to be home after all, and similarly, I wouldn't want to live in a bedsit when I could have an open, light, spacious apartment. I hear what you're saying though.
If that's super important to you and you have the money, look at catamarans. Way more space and light than most monos. Way more money too

I might be wrong. But it seems easier to bring a boat in, than to get one there.
You may want to look into Australia (or other parts of Oceana). Lots of boats there to choose from and quite a bit closer than USA.

I hear you, but I still have to cross an ocean to get to where I want to be... and I'm just not ready for that yet.

This might give a clue to costs...My son in law just shipped a 36' sportfish last week from West Palm Florida to Guatemala on the Pacific ocean side. Ocean freight was 6k and 6k for permits. Prep on both coasts and import tax was additional.

It's a moving target for sure..

All boats have their faults and foibles.....there is...in my opinion....no such thing as the "prefect" boat, some compromises must be accepted. You can't expect a big, beamy boat with tons of interior space to perform as a racer, etc, etc
I think this is terrible advice to a neophyte. Too inexperienced to know what they want, no opinions or preferences of their own, a build will take years if not decades and the dream withers and the hulk remains. Build a boat if you love building. Buy a boat if you want to sail.

Re: The boat you want is in the wrong location

I have a nice refurbished Beneteau 390 Oceanis on the hard stand in Subic Bay Philippines which has sailed from the US through the Pacific to New Zealand up to Subic Bay. Currently NZ registered and more than capable of doing the trip to Japan. Message if it's of interest, cheers

The Hunter line of boats are daysailers, not Water boats">blue water boats. Kelly Peterson, Hinckley, Catalina, etc. Anything but h=Hunter

I thought it was cheap too. That particular boat was shipped on a trailer on deck and not on a floating dry dock.

Re: The boat you want is in the wrong location

Get a Laser and go sailing for 3hr every other weekend for 6-8mo then start looking for a bigger boat.

The point is that if you can get a boat back from the US (as proposed in your original post), it should be easier / cheaper from Oz and vicinity since they are significantly closer to your final destination.

Re: The boat you want is in the wrong location

"I'm not Robinson Crusoe and will never know how to weld, plumb, fix engines or electrical systems... to any degree, probably."

"But engines, plumbing, electrical, sewing, metal work ( stainless steel, mild steel, aluminum ) fiberglass ETC.. I'm pleased for you! Really! Your boat must be perfect. As I possess none of those skills,,,,,,"

The above lines were ones you posted at another thread.
Whether you get a boat that's 25' or 100' you'll need to get some skills in those areas if you ever want to "cruise".
The biggest downfall of building is what you don't know, to be successful at building, (even having all the skill sets with tools,) I'll use an esoteric phrase;
"You need to build the 2nd or 3rd boat first".
From your desires of an "apartment", perhaps you should get a houseboat.
Then get a little sailboat to tie alongside, learn to sail, use it to learn some skills, read a lot of books about boats, their care/upkeep/repair.

Re: The boat you want is in the wrong location

SanPuluei,

Your query is confusing.

Are you a Japanese resident? And do you plan to keep and sail a boat in Japan?

If so, the only possible way that you can keep it flagged in whatever your nationality happens to be is to personally sail the boat to Japan under its own keel. By law, all Japanese residents must flag their boats Japanese and are subject to the same rules as Japanese citizens. This is not a particularly unique requirement around the world. However, generally some allowances for cruising yachtsman are often made, sometimes officially, sometime in a discretionary manner. In Japan, for example, if a foreign national sails his own boat in, it is not actually imported because you can claim that you will be sailing it out when you leave...regardless of when that is. So, that is probably the only way that you can avoid the regulations pertaining to Japanese nationals and residents alike regarding flagging and operator license requirements.

I, myself may, in fact, do just that if I do not sell my boat here in the Med prior to moving back to Japan in a few years.

Have a look at Kirk Patterson's site Konpira Consulting if you do live in Japan. It has a wealth of information on cruising there.
