Re: The death of Active Captain

This of course may be a stupid and self evident question, but hey...I needed a break from Tropical Storm Bud Prep, so here it goes.

Is Cruising now more about what software app you have on your electronic device than finding a good local Taco?

Sorry...as someone who has never bought into the techy electronics game, I find this entire thread pretty humorous, as if someone's entire cruising dreams and plan is now shot to hades over an ap....really?

We or at least I am using it very differently.
My biggest use is going down the ICW with the very useful notes telling you there is shoaling, hug the green side etc. This is so frequent that it really needs of be seen on a plotter or other nav instrument. I run my IPad in the cockpit solely for this reason for the AC alerts. Now that Garmin has pulled their excellent App, I’m still searching for a solution that isn’t buy a Garmin plotter, which I’m sure we all understand is why things are as they are now.

I can access the charts and some data on the website under Windows, but not seeing any markers for anchorages, hazards or amenities etc. It does show marinas and fuel docks, but that seems to be about all.

Using Chrome on an Android tablet I see everything I have set in the Filters.

I guess.... but our recent experience was seeing lots of SHOAL!! Markers!!! on AC with warnings that it was only 9' deep way over by the east (or west) shore. IOW, lots of "Wolf!" -- and we'd often see 2x the depth reported in some of the warnings.

Not that we didn't appreciate the potential heads-up... but it did seem like some folks got nervous when depth was less than 20' or so...

I've tried scrolling through this long thread to see what the deal is, but my old login doesn't work. I guess I just have to set up a new account and start over? That sucks.

Just contact Garmin and request a password reset. Or they probably have a "forgot my password" link that will accomplish that automatically.

Re: The death of Active Captain

I’ve notnwaded through the whole thread so apologies if this is duplicate info.

I’m using AquaMap to view AC data in my iPhone. It seems to be a reasonable application. When I’ve had difficulty their customer support has been fantastic.

It’s NOT a navigation app, I use it as a PLANNING app. For that it works well. At least so far for me.

Re: The death of Active Captain

I apologize for only scanning this thread. I don’t know that I saw an answer:

Have Garmin BlueChart. Had been able to sign in and update the AC data. Now, I get ‘communication with server failed.’

Anyone can speak to solving? Thanks in advance

So, how were the tacos?

I agree that the emphasis on electronic aids is a curious trend. On the other hand, what are you doing on a social network, spending hours commenting via computer/Internet on a multitude of issues?

We are all finding our way through this new information age. If an app increases someone's safety or confidence, is that a bad thing? If it is a substitute for basic seamanship or experience, well...

Sailing has seem a real decline in the US in the past decades. Maybe its latest incarnation will be different from what we knew in the past. While I still have a leadline, I use a depth sounder. RDF has given way to GPS. Maybe this is the future of sailing.

Maybe young attractive people filming their cruising is a viable career choice. I don't know.

Hang in there and have a cerveza for me.

I'm having the same problem. AC was updating until 31 days ago. I'll try to re-set my password and see if that works.

To be clear, it's the BlueChart Mobile app that's discontinued. BlueCharts themselves are still apparently available.
