I'm looking for a reliable and affordable monohull that can handle in weather, ideally min 30', and am ready to buy. This will be my first boat, but my parents are handy boaters and have lived aboard cruising on theirs.
The main reason I linked to this boat is I have done a fair amount of work on her in the last year.

Hi again Weavis,

Nudge nudge wink wink.
No pressure or hurry, but it would be frightfully nice if you could eventually provide a few hints regarding those frugal-friendly marinas in Spain that you mentioned...

I will of course start my own research in due time, and I won't hold you (or anyone else) responsible for any recommendations that might turn out less than wonderful, I promise, but it would be nice to have a few starting points.

I have now read through the entire thread, and want to thank you for creating it, and also for providing various helpful info and links (other participants too, of course). I followed up some of your affordable cat suggestions for example which sounded mighty enticing, but I will probably stick to looking for a mono after all. The Heavenly Twins 27 indeed could be a fine craft, but full standing headroom including around the saloon table is something I promised myself I would have in my next boat. After all, how do you drink the King, otherwise? I look back fondly on six years of mucking about in a 21-footer that had a snug and otherwise quite usable cabin with the one drawback that I could only stand up in it when the weather was fine (i.e. the hatch was open).

A bit of a pity that this thread (as unfortunately seems to happen often, on basically any Internet forum) partway through devolved into a bit of tit-for-tat and "frugaller-than-though" rhetoric, but I do not believe (hope) that it has come to the end of its useful life.

Respectfully,

W.

Sorry for the delay in answering.. Easier if when you require specifics to drop a Private Message... as a moderator we spend a lot of time reading everyone elses stuff.....

Here is one: for a 30 foot cat was €3500 a year plus electric water and some tax of €350 every 3 months... MDL marina. It is as nice as it looks in the video. The location is one hour away from Barcelona on the train or car rental.

In Almeria negotiate on a rate... I think Boatman61 paid something like $18 a night as a drop in.....

All marinas not famous on the East side of Spain will negotiate.. or sublease off a marina berth holder..

Okay, that _is_ a start. A marina with a wine bar and a guitar soundtrack, beloved by chic women... I'll drink to that. Hope they have a tolerance for scruffy liveaboards though.

Seriously, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. And yes, I should have guessed that moderators must be busy. I can hardly keep up just with reading the bunch of threads I'm subscribed to. I've always wondered how on earth regular contributors find the time to put out so much good stuff.

Also thanks for the tip on negotiating. Luckily my Spanish is currently improving at a pace that will allow me to shoot numbers from the hip in about a year's time.

Cheers,

W.

Whoa boatie! Not good! I hope you are up and about soon.
Ps, I think sailboats are safer. It's the land that will get ya!

Thanks Ann.. Sea Dreaming.. it was a stupid mistake.. they have silly high, chined kerbstones at the driveway up to the garage's and I confirmed one needs to approach them head on.. especially if they're running down a steep gradient..
Approached at to sharp an angle and the front wheel went sideways.. lost the weight management battle with the momentum and the bike came down on my right leg pinning me by the ankle.. had forgotten how heavy 250kgs actually is..
Anyway.. bar some bad bruising to ankle and ego, all's good.. weather permitting Monday is Test Day.. give the ankle some brake testing..

Ouch. Sounds painful. Glad to hear it wasn’t too nasty a spill Boatie.

Last winter I spent six months driving around Canada and the USA on my motorcycle. Was the best (and fairly frugal) winters I’ve ever had. And luckily I kept two wheels on the pavement at all times.

Yeah Mike.. its a great compensator for those times one can't sail.. and Portugal's great m/bike country.
Its funny how many folks into bikes come into sailing..
Must be those 'On the Edge' moments..

So true. I started motorcycling only after taking up sailing. Initially I was surprised at the overlap between the two, but I think it has something to do with travelling in the open air; the freedom; the simplicity; and for non-Harley owners, the frugality.

re: The Frugal (AKA poor) Sailor

I just caught up with the thread.

When you said that a M/Bike was coming into your life again, I thought perhaps was a tad brave.
Recently I got an electric bike and scooter and am finding the roads and cycle paths a touch painful to deal with, people and all. Also agility on bikes for a non user over the years is not quite as it used to be.

I took a ride for a couple of hours on a friends 400c motor scooter before I opted for the bicycle and did not experience the same thrill as I had in years gone by when filled with pee and vinegar....

As the eyesight dims a little and the reflexs slow, I didnt want to be going fast enough to find that bones and ego also have suffered through the passage of time. I fell off the bicycle once and cracked a rib however that was due to Cruz Campo and a lot of it...

A speedy recovery my friend and less painful times ahead.

Crikeys, Mike, ya tryin' to start a war here? That's about like denigrating multihulls in terms of inflammatory statements!
