re: The Frugal (AKA poor) Sailor

It is because of my alas mature years, that I am selling my 1979 Goldwing motorcycle. Eyesight, reaction times and I don't bounce like I did in my younger days. I have called it land sailing. Still keeping the bicycle though. Motorcycles are less forgiving for the older folks.

re: The Frugal (AKA poor) Sailor

Yeah, now that I've hit the double nickel (55), I've slowed my bike down a bit, too. It's rare for me to take it over 110 mph these days!

Back in my younger days, 145+mph with no front brakes, ripping through open range ranch land full of cows at 3am, no problem.

I thought about getting a DR650, or a DRZ400 because of the lighter weight, but I'd probably end up riding wheelies through traffic!

I haven't figured out how to do wheelies with a sailboat, or speeds in excess of 100mph in a crowded harbor yet!

Its not the cc's its the weight that comes with them that's the problem.. and race bars.. kinda bent into the slow motion gravity failure already..
Maybe the sit up and beg Honda 500 in Lisbon would have been wiser..
Sigh..!!! another coulda, shoulda, woulda..

i was just having that conversation at work today, about all the fast bikes e.t.c. and me making at alive. my fast bike days are over. bicycles and practical cars are my current life. and maybe a sailboat in the very near future.

I need to fly jets to get my speed fix legally, but if I was in a position to do that right now, I wouldn't be as concerned with frugality!

Sorry Jim, you’re probably right. My bad… But have you seen the prices of Harleys? And have you seen the rather poor mileage most of them get? Not particularly frugal; fun I’m sure, but not very frugal.

re: The Frugal (AKA poor) Sailor

A sunny day, no traffic, no cops, and a flat freeway. What more could you ask for?
0 to 135 mph and back to (well, just enough slowing to use a freeway exit in about two miles more or less) was enough for me to know my Yamaha 750 had perfect gearing ratios.
That was enough for me and then I could ride it just for fun.
Now, 20 knots seems like 200 mph on a sailboat.
