Re: Thought I'd seen it all

Is this a trolling motor, a DC generator, or both? It would make for excellent helm response if it is a trolling motor.

The anode on the old non-functional engine is zinc. The boat is in fresh water ... zinc does not work and we don;t know if it's bonded anyway.

We'll see how it works in a week or so when it's launched.

Re: Thought I'd seen it all

guess if the engine doesn't work it doesn't matter much if the prop pits away

It matters if the trolling motor wastes away.

A misplaced bow thruster.

Re: Thought I'd seen it all

oops forgot a couple of photos. Clearly a certified marine electrician.
Note the colour of the wires ... not the same as those at the motor.

Re: Thought I'd seen it all

Could it be a hydro-generator? That was my first thought, but it makes about as much sense as a prop.

Re: Thought I'd seen it all

Would there be a concern regarding the motor pushing on the rudder?

The small amount of thrust from a trolling motor will hardly be felt by the rudder support. This set-up might give enough way to maneuver into or from a slip if the wind is light.
