Touch Screen Chart Plotter Problems

I have a Standard Horizon 1010i Touch Screen Chart Plotter at the helm of my new (to me) sloop that came with the boat. When out yesterday it started raining hard and even though I have a bimini, everything got wet including me. Once the chart plotter's screen was wet, it did not respond to my touch. After the rain and later in the day when everything on the boat had dried, the plotter again worked as before, responding to my touches.

Is this normal? If so, why would anyone buy a touch screen plotter unless it was going to be below deck at the nav station?

Thank you in advance for your input.

Yep, similar problems w a Raymarine Axiom 9 recently. It wasnt so bad in rain, but really whacked out when it got heavy salt spray on it...even w the touch screen disabled!

Yes, normal.

Put a drop of water onto your phone screen to see how well / bad it works.

Keep a towel handy to wipe the screen dry.

Because the manufacturers are very quiet about the problem.

A lot of people only find out about it after they install one.

Re: Touch Screen Chart Plotter Problems

Popped into my local RM dealer yesterday for a widget and a chat. He showed me the latest Raymarine Element S which was initially designed for the huge US sports fishing boat market so has buttons rather than touch screen. However, they have also produced a version for yachts as we also have wet fingers.

Very impressed with it and a 1/3 cheaper than the Axiom range. Does have a cut down Lighthouse O/S but still has wifi, AIS and radar options. Oh and also comes with netflix too. Why anyone on watch needs or should be watching netlfix is debatable but its there.

Very tempted

Install 2, one below decks, one a above. I installed such on a boat before a recent passage...was glad we had a dry one. Disabled the touch screen on the above decks one when it got wet out. Glad we had 2.

The pro version has buttons.

I've got open cpn downstairs and tablets, in reality I haven't used plotters for years, I've only put it in because I'm changing the depth tranducer and a couple of old Raytheon displays etc and it seemed like a good idea to do the plotter as well.

Yeah, I found the Axion to bit of a challenge to navigate due to the extensive options. Its impressive all the features that put in the software, but it can make it cumbersome to navigate/configure.

Whats a bit ironic is that the Axiom is essentially a tablet running a version of Android and the various functions/views (RADAR, chart plotter, etc...) are apps...not that different than something like OpenPlotter.
