Cool Trimaran's can flip too ?

Trimaran flipp's off New Hampshire, three rescued. I did not think Trimaran's were able to flip. Could wave action do it or would one outer hull have to be filling with water? Any Trimaran design experts out there ?

Re: Trimaran's can flip too ?

Some of the older designs can submerge an ama. Newer designs are required to be able to float the entire boat on one ama. Could be the cause on this one but the pictures looked like pretty calm seas. Write up I saw this morning was not helpful.

What on earth gave you that idea.

No indication of the cause in your report, but any multihull sailboat can flip given the right (wrong!) wind and wave conditions and sailplan.

My 3,600 lb Corsair F28 flying a 1,000 sq ft asym will bury an ama and flip in 20 knots, in flat seas!

Re: Trimaran's can flip too ?

The local news said afternoon squall line may have played a part. Not unusual to get straight line winds of 50 kts or more with little warning in that area. I’ve believe I have seen this vessel many times along the coast of Maine.

Why are the photographs of two different trimarans upside down, which one is the correct one?

once again, proving that multihulls are much more stable upside down. Especially sailing multihulls, the rig make a great keel.

Re: Trimaran's can flip too ?

A fool can flip anything. I've had two tris and would fly an ama on both. It is not unlike any other boat, if your stretching the limit, for speed, keep a hand on the sheet. If it is weather reef early.

If by "flipping" you include "pitch-poling" (end for end down a steep wave face) any boat less the 100 - 150 feet can pitch-pole.

Re: Trimaran's can flip too ?

The only sailboat (not ship) that I know of that simply cannot flip is an upside down cat or tri. The stability is beyond measurement.

As another commented here: Why in the world would you think that a multihull couldn't flip? Stable? Yes. THAT stable? Most definitely not.

You may see some with "beach balls" attached to the top of their masts -- that's so they can't go "all the way" and have some hope of being righted.

Re: Trimaran's can flip too ?

The usual way to turn over a trimaran is by pitch-poling it.

I sailed a tri for years and they feel so SAFE that it is possible for a newbie to get the vessel into danger while feeling that all is OK.

In any kind of a seaway REDUCE SAIL and let her climb GENTLY over the waves instead of being driven into them. I also liked to take larger seas on the quarter, trimarans are fast enough that one need not sail them directly down wind if the conditions are rough.

A drogue is handy for not surfing down one wave and into the next causing a pitchpole situation.
Oh no, you had a Piver I loved mine.
