Unidirectional Fiberglass

Does anyone know where to source Unidirectional fiberglass strand (not matting or tape) used in securing chain plates to the hull, as in picture? and of course used for other things!!
I plan on manufacturing new chain plates and installing as per original design, however unable to find the unidirectional fiber stands on line. I know it is supplied with new chain plates if you order them at a company like Mack Yacht Sales however $500 to make my own vs $4500, just need the fiber strand.
Really don't want to the arduous task of separating full unidirectional matting to make individual meter long strands.
Alternative is yes to go with external plates, but looking at this route first.
If you are familiar with this product and /or know where to purchase, would be appreciated!!

Re: Unidirectional Fiereglass

Do a google search for "fiberglass tow" should return the results you are looking for. Canada composites has carbon tow

To help your goodie search, it’s fiberglass tow.

I checked some places I ordered from and they don’t seem to have it. Plus, it looks like you are in Newfoundland. So maybe your local shop has some fiberglass tow?

Re: Unidirectional Fiereglass

Ahh so, “tow” was the buzz word lots of hits however yes mainly carbon, cheaper than expected.
Carbon should be good if not stronger, though may need to insulate between carbon and the steel where it wraps around due to dissimilar metals.

Thanks for direction on this much appreciated!

Re: Unidirectional Fiereglass

I'd just use unidirectional glass. There doesn't appear to be a reason you'd need separate strands as the UD cloth can be made to go around the chainplate structure just fine.

Did you actually type "unidirrectional fiberglass" into Google and got no supplier hits? Not believing that.

I got about 50% good hits and more than anyone could want.

Jamestown Distributing is another.

Since when is carbon a metal?

Is there something i am missing?

Take a look at a galvanic corrosion chart. The cathodic (more noble) side typically shows graphite... Which is crystalized carbon. Carbon fiber has a reputation for needing an insulator when in contact with aluminum, but stainless can have issue too depending on it's metallurgy.

I buy ALL of my glass, carbon, micro balloons, epoxy from USComposites.com. Use only the 635THIN epoxy resin for FRP builds.
