Use Sailing As A Cure

Sailing should be used as a Cure for Juvenile Delinquency and that's what I want to use my boat for.

Check out the Los Angeles Maritime Institute. They operate two tall ships for youth training, mostly low income or troubled kids. Great results reported. Started by Irving and Exie Johnson in their schooner Yankee, the institute operates out of LA Harbor. www.lamitopsail.org

Red Marine,

I see you are in Washington, D.C. Perhaps you could link up with Outward bound--they have sailboat teamwork training for your target population.

Or were you going to take them out and drown them? (Sarcasm, or smartassism, anyhow I don't really think that, just joking. Really.

Good luck to you. It will certainly get the kids into a whole new environment and give them a new way to look at things.

I had an autistic boy out sailing once. The experience really lit him up. He went from a difficult child to pretty decent crew in just a few hours.

Re: Use Sailing As A Cure

I have a friend that was injured in Afghanistan, and does a lot of sailing these days. He wanted to help out others like him (injured soldiers), and has been very successful helping others - Open Blue Horizon - Veteran's Sailing

In your case, are you a really good sailor? Can you teach others (not easy)? Can you relate to these kids (do you have a background that you can relate with these kids)? If your answer to both is yes, and you have the burning desire to help direct these lost souls, go for it! I think it's a great idea, if you can earn their respect, and they look up to you. The sailing will be a plus, but just knowing someone cares enough to bother could make a huge difference in their lives. All my best if you can pull this off.

Re: Use Sailing As A Cure

Having raised and dealt with many a rowdy youngun', I have found that it is not always an easy task. When you deal with groups of delinquents you might want a little background in pack theory.

Often there is resentment for authority figures coming in. Therefore respect for the position of captain isn't a given.

5 determined 13 year olds can make a pretty tough dude walk a plank.

While sailing routines can be a great tool to give a kid direction, it is a good idea to have an indication that they want direction prior to casting off.

Now if you plan a dinghy sailing type of follow the lead boat thing it might be fun. Half dozen possibly armed junior thugs on a small boat?

I'll pass. Send pics
