Video of Matt Rutherfords Chesapeake Arrival

Hi

I am involved in helping CRAB, a group of Chesapeake sailors with disabilities and Matt Rutherford, the sailor who is only a few days away from completing the first ever solo non-stop voyage right around the Americas on his Vega 27. (Solo Around the America's Under Sail | An audacious attempt at sailing the Northwest Passage and circumnavigating entirety of both continents, to benefit Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating). Matt did it to raise funds for CRAB. If any of you have video cameras and plan on sailing to greet him, it would be helpful if you could share the video with CRAB. Tory Salvia at TheSailingChannel is coordinating the video project so they are the go-to people. It is all for a really good cause.

thanks from me.

Re: Video of Matt Rutherfords Chesapeake Arrival

He got past that hellacious cold front that's since been battering us down here in the Caribbean, and has crossed the Gulf Stream. Should be a piece of cake for him now, given what he's been through on his voyage. Wish I could be there to sail in company with him up the Bay.

Think the boat might need a bottom job when he gets in?

After a struggle for the last two days it looks like he will cross the line within an hour or so. What an incredible voyage!

Re: Video of Matt Rutherfords Chesapeake Arrival

It looks as if he's gone into Little Creek. The little red dot appears to be at a marina dock, and his boat speed is nil.

Maybe he went there to clear in. If he hadn't taken on supplies and equipment from another boat as he passed Brazil, I don't think he'd be required to clear in, since he didn't visit any foreign country, but making contact with a "hovering vessel", as the CBP puts it, obligates one to clear customs on arrival.
.
Whatever the case, congratulations are in order!

Re: Video of Matt Rutherfords Chesapeake Arrival

Plugging his coordinates into Google maps seems to show (Green arrow) that he's anchored. He did say that he wanted to first set foot on land back in Annapolis, so maybe that's still the plan. Also possibly having the parts to get his engine going again delivered?
