Way of the future?

Have Wingsails Gone Mainstream? | Sail Magazine

I love this idea, but a lot of traditionalists will snub their noses at it

Wow! I think they could be! I agree that the idea of standing rigging as we know it leaves something to be desired, and while learning to sail, I was surprised at just how long it took to make any progress to windward. I hope these work and catch on.

Love the concept. Simple and efficent. I remember the old gallant rig, but it never seemed to take off. Maybe with beneteau pushing it out the idea might get more mainstream attention Mass production should be able to bring down the cost. Fingers crossed.

Re: Way of the future?

If it can be made both strong enough for offshore work, and inexpensively enough to compete with traditional rigs, then I am sure it will eventually catch on.

Will "traditionalists" snub their noses at it? Probably. Just like there are still "traditionalists" out there who snub their noses at modern fiberglass boats with little to no overhang and Marconi sloop rigs. And the sailors of the future will view both groups similarly.

Remind anyone of a balanced lug rig (junk rig)?

The past is the future.
