The OP said sailing in. For me and several others, that means coming in under sail. Do not assume that "most" of us knew what he meant. We are not all mind readers and there was nothing in the original post that in any way alludes to using the motor.
In the meantime, he has confirmed that's what he meant. Let's not get too precious about this.

His question has been answered as he requested (and intended)

Totally situation dependent, but I still maintain that there are plenty of situations where it is simply impossible to sail her in. Tow, swim, kedge, get pushed by a friendly sea creature, sure, but not sail.

Totally agree Jim!

And most likely with a tiller and an unbalanced rudder... hard to do with a wheel and 2 +/- turns lock to lock!

Hard to propel a boat with a boney brain case.

I find it easier to scull

Re: Ways solo sail into slip safely

My advice if you are going to make sailing in and out of pens a regular habit is make one of these and keep it handy with a line already tied on.

One does get to meet other boat owners when the grappling hook is in regular use, unfortunately most of them appear to be bad tempered people.

I am curious how you employ a grappling hook for sailing in and out of pens?

The grappling hook is for when things don't go to plan and the boats come to a stop out of reach from everything with a boat hook.

If one does not wish to become a pariah one only sails into a pen very slowly employing only a scrap of genoa on a roller furler. In these circumstances having insufficient way to carry one into the pen is a high probability and being able to heave the hook onto a wharf, or even over a handy pushprit, can be a severe embarrassment saver.

Thanks for all the replies.

Will try running a fender across the slip and see if that will stop the boat.

See any problems ?

Your motor only runs in forward gear??? If it runs in reverse also, you might just think of trying that to stop you nicely before running the bow up on the dock!
