Re: Webb Chiles' 6th Circumnavigation Launching Today

His boat was next to ours for about a week last Summer on Lake Michigan. It was clean, well-found and very small. Chiles is a unique person with many accomplishments and skills. He is definitely a person who dances to the beat of his own drum. He, like most people who achieve much in life, practices a simple dictum: actions speak louder than words. Good luck and good sailing.

Re: Webb Chiles' 6th Circumnavigation Launching Today

Sounds like he got a good isometric workout on the passage. Another reason to get out sailing often. Bracing your weight against a cockpit seat is exercise with a water view. Gyms are so boring in comparison!

Re: Webb Chiles' 6th Circumnavigation Launching Today

Webb Chiles writes from his blog:

self-portrait in the present sea journal

One man wrote, “I’ll bet he bails in Hawaii."
I’m not going to, but I must confess to having considered responding, “You lose. Send me all your money.”

Re: Webb Chiles' 6th Circumnavigation Launching Today

Friend, Dave Skaife, showed him around Hilo and took him shopping while he was here. Dave is really impressed with him. Dave's a smallboat sailor too.
I wasn't in town when Captain Chiles was here but would have liked to at least meet him.

I thought I remembered it from this thread when I read Webb's blog earlier this afternoon.

Just to be sporting about this; has he left Hawaii yet?

I happen to know several life long sailors his age and based my evaluation based on that. He is perhaps much tougher than any of them although one of them is a marathon runner.

He is aiming for July 1 (Canada Day). Indeed he is tough.

I'm pretty certain he'll continue. I'd be surprised if he didn't. Anyway, we'll soon see.

He has a boat. He probably doesn't have any money...

Webb, have you done anything to help keep your boat drier?

I think on his blog he said he had a local sail guy make up some curtains to direct water that comes in the companionway down to the bilges directly instead of slowly seeping it's way there through the cushions and gear...
