Solar bimini, I like it. And you're correct, I did kind of extend the pulpit in my head when the pulpit is only what it attaches to. Much more descriptive, thank you for the input!
What are your thoughts on the sailboat Uma? I really think they did amazing work aesthetically and otherwise. All except for one thing. They removed some portion of one or more of the bulkheads. I remember him saying "they're not structural or anything" or something along those lines. And the next time they pulled the boat out of the water they had cracks in fore and aft of the keel. That made me wonder, so I did some research. Holy macaroni there are significant forces all over the place on a sailboat! Everything is important. From what I read, the bulkheads help the hull resist twisting, they do do something! I think that boat might be a little bit compromised, but I don't know. I did say might be, not is. What do you think?

Haven’t watched enough of them to know what they’ve done, but almost everything inside of an older sailboat is a supporting structure.

On our boat, the v-berth bed base and the shelves above the berth serve to stiffen the hull and prevent oil canning. They’re shelves secondarily.

The bulkheads around the mast and chainplates keeps the hull from going Taco when rigging tension is increased, as well as preventing the mast from being pushed down into the boat.

The aft bulkhead again is there to hold the hull shape.

The cabinets outboard are heavily glassed into the hull, these are stiffeners before they’re cabinets.

Left is a confusing term. If you are facing each other, your left is his right. Of course, the same is true of 'right'.

Port is on the left, IF YOU ARE FACING THE BOW. Similarly for 'Starboard.

The difference could be criitical!

Re: What do you call the..

sometimes, when all else fails...." thingamajig" works fine...

while not found in general nautical vernacular, I can assure you, that there has been many a time on my boat, when some or other girlfriend wanted to know what that "thingamajig" was for..no explaining could rectify or change this choice of descriptive verbage. Once an item became a thingamajig...it remained a thingamajig...though in time it became a " thingy"...progress....of sorts.....

The crutch is for one with a handi cap.
The gallows is for one that has been very bad.

I’ve always called the fixed arched thing a boom sits on a gallows and a notched removable thing a crutch.

That makes sense. Most manufacturers wouldn't add massive wooden structures... just because.
Thank you

Re: What do you call the..

If it's up in the air, has two legs that come down to the deck, one on starboard and one on port, and the boom comes down on top of it, it's called a boom gallows.

If it's got a single post and a padded half-moon "seat" on top, it's a boom crutch.

If the boom stops short of it and it has a radar on it, it's a radar arch.

If it's got canvas on it, with windows and such, it's called a dodger.

If it's made out of stainless steel at knee-to-thigh level, it's called the stern pulpit.

If it's on a real ship, with square sails and such, made of wood or steel, and about waist level, it's called the taffrail.

With Warm Aloha, Tim
