STRUCTURAL STEELS

ASTM A572-50 EX-TEN 50 Offers 50k PSI minimum yield.
ASTM A441 TRI-TEN Offers 50k PSI minimum yield. Resistance to atmospheric corrosion twice that of carbon steel.
ASTM A242 COR-TEN A Resistance to atmospheric corrosion four times that of carbon steel. Excellent paint adhesion.
ASTM A588-A COR-TEN B Similar to A242. Modified chemistry offers 50k PSI minimum yield. Resistance to atmospheric corrosion four times that of carbon steel.

Re: What do you think this boat is worth$

Hi Float me boat. A boat of this size and complexity doesn't look like it's for someone on a "budget". Even a boat in good condition is a never ending drain. Check the cost of a halyard for that, for example. Then check what it costs to moor it while working on it. Perhaps more than some other countries, in Australia, add "marine" to an item and the cost doubles! Look for something smaller and manageable. And get an out of water survey (which will cost quite a bit - surveyor's fee and haul-out fee).

Being realistic and as it is in Australia, not the US, expect to pay $100,000+ if its in good nic.

The boat is being sold AS IS WHERE IS. That’s a big red flag that the boat likely has serious issues. That's often a code for it having become an insurance write off.

Without knowing any more than that, and what’s in the advert, there’s no way of valuation.

Someone needs to go and see the boat. At the very least talk to Warren Harmer on 0418 776 939 or email warren@marineauctions.com.au the agent. Once you’ve done that then tell us the story and state boat's condition, and we can make some sort of educated guess.

From as is where is we don’t even know if the boat floats, has working anything, nor its recent history, particularly in the sense of why it has become an as is where is boat.

The boat could be so compromised that even its scrap value would be excessive.

'As is where is is' is usually no big problem, the vast majority of auctions for anything is normally 'as is where is' and not something most that are familiar with auctions would be overly concerned with........

Still, get it checked first....

Any boat not built buy a recognized yard tends to be hard to sell. So start by looking at the sale price for a similar "branded" boat then halve that. Is she is not in A1 condition halve it again. Then assume you will never be able to resell her and decide what she would be worth to you on the base of 0 resale value. If you get it for that you may have a barging or may have just paid a sensible price. DON'T think "I want this boat" and try to outbid others.

Actually it is simple. A boat is like a man/woman you picked up in a bar - she/he is perfect until you sober up!!

I wonder how all those home built farriers, schionings, orams, crowthers etc etc etc go.
I had no problem selling my home built boat, workmanship on many far exceeds a lot of production boats.

How long is a piece of string???
I would bid low but would not go past AU$30k, it would need at least that amount again spent on it to bring it up to a decent reconditioned level.
That’s my opinion anyway....cheers.

What do you think this boat is worth$

The fact that it had bottom paint in November is a good sign. That probably means that the hull is in decent shape (still definitely get a survey). Bare in mind that the sails are in poor condition. That'll be a custom job and for a twin-masted rig that size it won't be cheap (I paid $1000 for a 100sqft mainsail and that rig is probably ten times the size). Likely also needs all new lines and probably a few new blocks, clutches, etc to make it sailable. Probably wouldn't go any higher than about $50k AUD, and only that if the survey turns up no major issues. If you have the repairs budget, it might make a great boat. If however, the total cost would exceed $100k AUD, I would take my money elsewhere unless you are really set on the steel hull.

The ongoing maintenance costs for a boat that big are going to be huge.

Compared to a small boat you are probably right.
But bigger boats offer so much more than small boats.

To put it another way, the ongoing maintenance of that house are going to be huge.............compared to a cardboard box.

Re: What do you think this boat is worth$

I understand people are trying to be helpful to this OP, but I don’t see how anyone can come up with any figure at all without actually inspecting the boat, and guesswork doesn't help much at all.
It’s really no different from buying any boat, anywhere, and this one doesn’t even have any others in the line to compare it with. If it fits the OP’s criteria, and he’s serious about buying a boat, there is only one next step towards that goal. He needs to get over there and inspect it.
Then he could post his observations, and we will be able to give him objective analysis.
Otherwise we’re blowing in the wind.
