You need to let us know whether there is a base asking price, (it says price on application in the add), or whether it’s an actual auction by the Marine Auctions people? Auctions of boats and houses is not normal in The States, as it is in Australia.
It looks okay in the photographs, but I would not dream of offering anything without a detailed inspection, as the add “highly recommends.” They wouldn't put that without a reason.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, float.

I would agree with the auctioneers, who advise: "... Marine Auctions highly recommends that every potential purchaser inspect or arrange a surveyor or representative on their behalf inspect the vessel prior to bidding."

Stop bidding at $15K.. but inspect it first.
It may be worth sinking another $30K into to get her into basic safe sailing condition.

My first knee jerk number without digging in much. 60-100K USD.

If you could get it under 50K there ya go.

One major assumption: The steel is in reasonable condition.

Impossible question given the information supplied. Steel boats can be worth a lot and conversely can be massive holes in the water in which to continually toss your hard earned money.

I may not be the best person to add to the conversation beyond that given I wouldn't touch it with someone else's money.

1990 steel boat? Depends on if the steel on the interior is ok, frames, bildge, underfloors, etc. New sails and rigging made 12k. If boat motors well it has to be worth 35k use at a all cash auction. Start at the lowest amount possible, you could be the only bidder. Boat looks good. Try to find out the last time it was on the hard and get details.

Also depends on the steel used.. home builds often opt for mild steel.

Re: What do you think this boat is worth$

There is no base price jolly roger, i’m not sure of sail condition etc.
I am only going to buy a steel hull, as thats what i want.
Prefer wooden deck, but hey, i am on a budget untill i win lotto or i become a rich artist, hint hint
I did some ruff as guts math: assumng boat is worth au 120 in good cond; it may be argued that it needs a new fitout and general overhaul which could be worth 80k, dunno, or it could be very much full of problems that go on forever,
So it could be worth from 15-30k
I have been learning to weld.

Is it toooooo much boat? Maybe
I maybe better off with a smaller vessell to keep costs down.
Thanks for response

??????? Why? We have sailed our steel hulled GAIA around the world and after 23 yrs still have not had a reason to weld. Although we know how. When one does need to weld it is almost always better done by a professional with proper equipment. It will be done faster and better. Our hull was welded professionally and out on the deep ocean we are mighty glad of it.

Even here, now in the Bahamas, when the sea turns foul and the wind turns into an unexpected direction, giving a long fetch at anchor, like what happened last night, the mighty bonk, bonk on the bull at anchor worries us not a bit. We have never had 3v3n a hint of weld failure out of the many hundreds of feet of welds.

But so as not to hijack the thread we would underline that one needs to inspect the interior of the hull. On GAIA we can remove all interior wood work in order to keep her 'Bristol shape'. Not always possible in all boats. Steel boats rust from the inside. They do not rust from the outside, at least underwater, to any significant extent.

When we have scratched the hull, on hard stuff tsk tsk, as occasionally happens, one can leave those scratches until the next haul out even if that is two or more years away with no harm done.

One major advantage of steel hulls is the ease of repairs when needed.

But inspect the inside!!!

Beg your pardon but it does not depend on the steel used. Depends on how the boat is welded and maintained. Was she built with adequate lumber holes? Is she easily inspected and kept clean and dry. Are her bilges kept dry. How is the shower, if installed, drained and kept dry? Is there a proper pan under the engine? And under shaft seals etc? Does the anchor chain drop into a proper hold? Is it drained correctly? Is the hull painted properly on the inside? Is the lead kept away from the steel.? And sealed?

We paid attention to all these things on GAIA and although we considered Corten its use is controversial due to painting issues.

Look at the inside!

Jim
